This user/study group explores the world of functional programming and welcomes members with a wide range of experience levels using many different languages. Our previous meeting's summary is online and includes links for learning more about functional programming: http://groups.google.com/group/pdxfunc/browse_thread/thread/a1c690cbdfd914f6/b3ee2009fd778a1a#b3ee2009fd778a1abb Our next meeting: Time and location: Monday, December 10th, 7pm at CubeSpace, 622 SE Grand, Portland, OR 97214. Directions: http://www.cubespacepdx.com/directions Speaker Don Stewart of Galois Inc. is the co-author of the upcoming book _Real World Haskell_. He has written academic papers on a variety of functional topics and published open source software ranging from a tiling window manager to dynamic module loaders. His home page includes links to his projects and papers: http://www.cse.unsw.edu.au/~dons/ Topic Functional concurrency with Haskell Abstract: The average laptop these days has two cores, many desktops have four or eight, and future systems will have many more. How do we structure programs to best utilise these resources, and what kind of support can we expect from our programming languages? In this talk and demo, Don will introduce various approaches to concurrency and parallel programming in Haskell, including low-level concurrency, shared memory abstractions, and parallel strategies, and discuss how purely functional techniques can help ease the pain of programming in the age of concurrency. The big problems with the current Google Calendar setup are scheduling recurring events with odd schedules ('last Saturday of the month' is tricky, as is 'every other Tuesday plus the third Sunday'), and access control: we want everyone involved with a group to have access to add events, but still be able to handle spam and other misbehavior. The cycling community I am "shift" in is working on a new calendaring app. Some of it's features include: * Letting anybody from the community create an event without creating an account first, but still letting them edit the event later by sending them a key via email. * Every event submission creates a new wiki page, and a new forum thread for people to communicate about the upcomming event. * Previous event locations, are live searchable via AJAX to make new event creations less tedius. * Automatic map creation. * Feedback system to make reports about how the event actually went. -- teknotus Take Notice From selenamarie at gmail.com Sat Dec 8 14:27:28 2007 From: selenamarie at gmail.com (Selena Deckelmann) Date: Sat, 8 Dec 2007 14:27:28 -0800 Subject: [Pdx-pm] Grand Unified PDX Programming Group Calendar? Another issue is group announcements. I would love to be able to contact the leads of each group when we have an event that would be of interest to multiple communities. Right now, I have to contact 10 different people. Reducing that to a mailing list/forum and two or three people would be very nice. -selena -- Selena Deckelmann PDXPUG - Portland PostgreSQL Users Group http://pugs.postgresql.org/pdx http://www.chesnok.com/daily From scratchcomputing at gmail.com Wed Dec 12 10:20:56 2007 From: scratchcomputing at gmail.com (Seven till Seven) Date: Wed, 12 Dec 2007 10:20:56 -0800 Subject: [Pdx-pm] Meeting Tonight: Erlang and POE Message-ID: <200712121020.56665.ewilhelm@cpan.org> 6:53pm at FreeGeek -- 1731 SE 10th Ave. Speaker: Kevin Scaldeferri Erlang -- The Perl of Functional Languages / POE -- The Erlang of Perl Kevin will discuss the message-passing approach to concurrent programming, using two example systems: the Erlang programming language and the POE framework for Perl. Perl 5.8.x is binary compatible across subversions (except for 5.8.2 I believe, which is why it lasted two or three days in public). Some of these questions already have built-in answers available on our web site, and here are some of the most common: Q: How do I obtain a review copy? A: E-mail me at cheryl.martinez at apress.com with your UG name and address and what book you?d like to review. I will send it along as quickly as possible. If you need raffle copies, you can e-mail me for those as well. Q: Where would you like us to post online reviews of your books? A: Please read the ?Suggestions for Writing Apress (and friends of ED) Book Reviews? page at http://www.apress.com/community/writeareview Q: How do I and group members take advantage of the user group book discount? A: All group members** of a registered Apress user group may receive a 25% discount to any Apress or friends of ED title when the book is purchased through our distributor, Springer. (Place your order with our distributor, Springer, by calling 1-800-SPRINGER.
