problem with CPAN

I seem to have mucked up Net::FTP or my CPAN configuration ...or 
something else.
  When running CPAN the following occurs:
cpan> r         (for example, same result with install modulename, etc)
CPAN: Strable loaded ok
going to read /.cpan/Metadata
CPAN : LWP::UserAgent loaded ok
Fetching with LWP:
	ftp://ftp.cs.colorado.edu/pub/perl/CPAN/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
Fetching with Net::FTP:
	ftp://ftp.cs.colorado.edu/pub/perl/CPAN/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
Can't call method "sockport" on an undefined value at 
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/Net/FTP.pm line 789


Any suggestions?
