I don't think anyone has volunteered for a technical meeting yet so: Maybe we should have everyone put their name into a box and every social meeting we draw a new name out of the box to give some kind of presentation at the next technical meeting. The presentation could always start of with, this is who I am, this is what I do, and this is how I use Perl. Then if the person giving the presentation couldn't think of anything interesting to teach they could just bring some code that they were working on over the last year and we could all walk through it and talk about it. For the cases when the person just didn't end up brining anything we could have a piece of mystery code that the presenter will get 5 minutes to look at before explaining it to the group. The mystery code should probably be pretty obfuscated with little or no comments. :) Food for thought! Todd p.s. I'd like to give a presentation on POE although I don't think I'll be ready by the 10th of April. Maybe next time? Curtis Poe wrote: > The next meeting is April 10th. I'm not sure if we are limited solely on technical meeting locations or just social meeting locations. A couple of places that might be good for social meetings are: Iron Horse Restaurant - http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8454274/ Limelight Restaurant and Lounge - http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8454299/ Brite Spot Restaurant - http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8471490/ We could have a technical meeting at my house in West Moreland if we really needed a spot. The only thing is that I don't have a projector, screen, or fold-up chairs. So we'd have to do some planning and borrow some equipment from somewhere. More food for thought. I'm getting hungry with all of this thinking.... I tried to avoid scheduling another one at ONSITE! because the location of the social meeting was Produce Row, a small pub that is not really well-laid out for such a meeting. We wound up getting crowded into a corner and couldn't really meet well. Other places that have been suggested have been: 1. Too far away from the center of Portland 2. Too smoky (bummer. I smoke but I didn't want to foist it on you) 3. Have regular room reservations for the night we meet 4. Have high minimum prices for the room In short, finding a place to meet has been problematic. Tom Phoenix is offering to do a presentation on sorting. He'll cover techniques from basic to advanced, thus satisfying virtually everyone, but that still requires a good spot to meet. I've bought an easel and pad for the presentation, but we still need a spot. I *suppose* we could just overrun the Lucky Lab and have Tom give a public, on-the-spot presentation (we'll call it Guerilla Perl Theater :), but the Lab might object -- not to mention the fact that Tom might object! So, we're looking at a social meeting at the Lab lest someone come up with a last-minute suggestion. Let's work the phones, kids! If you can find a meeting spot that gets around the four problems listed above, let us know. I think we'd be willing to be flexible on the "too far away from the center" if we can just find a spot. -- Cheers, Curtis Poe Senior Programmer ONSITE! The room is 22 people max (for seating and eating, I'm sure we could fit a few more in). There is a $100 minimum total order, but I'd be willing to make up the difference if we're a bit short. However, they are booked for Wednesday. I've gone ahead and bit the bullet. ONSITE! has rented chairs for Wednesday night and we'll meet at Produce Row again. Partial details are at http://portland.pm.org/. Note that the social meeting is now at 6:30 and the technical starts at 8:00 instead of 8:30. This was due to complaints from members that the meetings were running too late for them. If onsite folks don't mind hosting technical meetings, it doesn't _necessarily_ mean we have to have socials at produce row, though it's certainly the most convenient spot. We could meet for that at e.g. the rose and raindrop. Tom Phoenix gave a presentation on sorting methods. He started with basic sorting techniques, moved on to advanced techniques, explaining the Schwartzian Transform, and then discussed more esoteric ideas such as using Inline::C. It has something for everyone. Now, we're looking for someone to do a presentation for the next pdx.pm meeting. If you have something you think you'd like to do a presentation on, either reply to the list, or send an email to me personally, if you'd prefer to discuss it a bit, first. -- Cheers, Curtis Poe Senior Programmer ONSITE! Randal Schwartz (you've heard of him, right?) will give a presentation on May 15th about how he used Template Toolkit to rebuild http://www.stonehenge.com/ and overcame a number of obstacles that he encountered. If we're very nice, we might even convince him to discuss why he chose Template Toolkit over HTML::Mason, which is, if I recall correctly, what he was using previously. As we don't have any other projectors available, the technical meeting location will still be ONSITE! Technology. As for a social location, I'm going to talk to Rose and Raindrop about their meeting room and we can just walk over here from there. Also, I have two other presenters *tentatively* lined up for subsequent months. Without making promises, one will be giving a talk about testing and the other will share with us how he used Perl's data munging facilities to make his job easier. I'm also thinking about putting together a presentation on Perl's type system since many people have questions about this. -- Cheers, Curtis Poe Senior Programmer ONSITE!
