Turns out to be the W32/SirCam Virus. I'm surprised none of you are getting hit. I've recieved over 20mb worth of it in the past 3 days. But since it's apparently a general virus rather than a specific attack on me, nevermind . -- Jeff TIMTOWTDI From protek_2000 at yahoo.com Mon Jul 23 13:18:48 2001 From: protek_2000 at yahoo.com (Michael Mitchell) Date: Wed Aug 4 00:05:21 2004 Subject: Help with DOS attack In-Reply-To: <3B5C6491.D2FC8D67@vpservices.com> Message-ID: I've received it, the extension is deceptive with a name.doc.bat handle. Clearly it is grabbing names out of various folks email address books. In asking for advice I did what I knew would be useless, and replied: "Never open executables sent by email, even allegedly by friends." I offer that same advice. Again this has a "bat" extension. -mike mitchell -----Original Message----- From: owner-pdx-pm-list@pm.org [mailto:owner-pdx-pm-list@pm.org]On Behalf Of Jeff Zucker Sent: Monday, July 23, 2001 10:53 AM To: pdx-pm-list@pm.org Subject: Re: Help with DOS attack I wrote: > > So far this morning I have gotten about 25 emails, each over .5mb > in length with binary attatchments from someone I don't know. I've gotten about a dozen over the last year, and they all sit (unopened!) in a folder in my email called "Worms." For sure. I never opened any of it. > I offer that same advice. Again this has a "bat" extension. Actually the give away is not .bat, but a double extension such as .doc.bat with the final extension being .bat, .lnk, .com, .exe, .pif, etc. Also the attatchment has the same name as the subject line of the message. Apparently this one is a bit harder than usual for virus-cleaners to spot because it hides itself in the recycle bin. (yes it is an "MS virus", even though that is redundant to say) More info at http://www.cert.org/current/current_activity.html#W32/SirCam -- Jeff TIMTOWTDI From robb at empire2.com Fri Jul 27 12:58:02 2001 From: robb at empire2.com (Rob Bloodgood) Date: Wed Aug 4 00:05:21 2004 Subject: Where to buy SuSE locally? I can't remember the name of the shop, and I can't spend the time to wade through qwestdex.com right now to look for it by address. But, maybe you do. I was also able to find it in Miami at a Barnes and Nobles, maybe they sell it here as well? Hate to support anyone but Powell's Books, though, but since they don't sell it last time I checked... Or, you could pop around to NW 23rd and I could lend you my CDs... They're trying to tell us that multi-user licenses have been revoked and we are finding the information they provided to be all messed up...Three cheers for open-source! (DOS one, Perl two? You guys probably don't knit...)
