Marc, are you still willing to come and razzle'n'dazzle us? :-) In all cases, I reserved the meeting room at Pythian, (St-Laurent shopping center, atop the movie theater) for 6:30pm (the meeting would "officially" start at 7:00, but I want to give some leeway for peeps to come earlier and chat). I also have a couple of backup presentations if Marc cannot attend (I'm going to give a Perl OO lunch'n'Learn Friday, so you may become my guinea pigs), and of course anybody is welcome to suggest topics/activities or, *gasp*, grab the talking stick. :-) Joy, `/anick From yanick at babyl.dyndns.org Mon Mar 12 10:18:51 2012 From: yanick at babyl.dyndns.org (Yanick Champoux) Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2012 13:18:51 -0400 Subject: [Ottawa-pm] Meeting this Wednesday In-Reply-To: <4F5E2D70.4070400@babyl.dyndns.org> References: <4F5E2D70.4070400@babyl.dyndns.org> Message-ID: <4F5E2FFB.5000304@babyl.dyndns.org> On 12-03-12 01:08 PM, Yanick Champoux wrote: > I reserved the meeting room at Pythian, (St-Laurent shopping center, > atop the movie theater) for 6:30pm (the meeting would "officially" start > at 7:00, ... and I didn't see that the meeting room protested at that is actually booked all the way to 6:45pm. Message-ID: <4F60A3D1.4070106@pythian.com> ... Marc is going to present us his Historiki initiative, which consists of setting up an AI-assisted wiki called SkyNet to classify and report on timelines. Nothing there that can go wrong. Nothing at all. Nah, just kidding about the whole SkyNet thingy. The real blurb lies below. Hope to see ya tonight! `/anick Introducing Historiki - Brainstorming solutions to complex visualization and database design problems Historiki's mission is to contribute a major and innovative Web-based project, in the area of chronologically-organized information and knowledge visualization tools, to the collaborative global movement that is creating a Web-based repository of knowledge, universally and freely accessible to all. Historiki's focus is on historical, time-based information. Historiki is being set up as a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization, similar to the Wikimedia Foundation, and in the tradition of the Open Source and Creative Commons movements. Historiki is just getting started and is at the early design phase. Historiki's founder, Marc Wickham, would like to introduce the organization, share some of the technical challenges involved, and hold a brainstorming session to develop potential approaches and solutions to these problems. -- Yanick Champoux, Senior Perl Developer The Pythian Group - love your data http://www.pythian.com -- -- Pythian proud winner of Oracle North America Titan Award for Exadata Solution...watch the video on pythian.com From champoux at pythian.com Wed Mar 14 07:00:45 2012 From: champoux at pythian.com (Yanick Champoux) Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2012 10:00:45 -0400 Subject: [Ottawa-pm] Meeting this Wednesday In-Reply-To: References: <4F5E2D70.4070400@babyl.dyndns.org> <4F5E3332.9040401@babyl.dyndns.org> <443449D4-A875-4F04-A1CB-6E460A822E95@purkis.ca> <4F5E5811.8060908@pythian.com> Message-ID: <4F60A48D.5000208@pythian.com> On 03/13/12 17:03, Steve Purkis wrote: > Well, let's just say it's someone I know well;-). The resulting discussion was a fun one. Now, a few follow ups: * Banana history *is* fascinating. Just read how Gros Michel rose and fell, and how the world would collapse if a virus was to wipe out the current Cavendish variety - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gros_Michel_banana :-) * On a more technical note, the module I was mentioning for graphing is Graph::Clicker (https://metacpan.org/module/Chart::Clicker). There are also GD::Graph (https://metacpan.org/module/GD::Graph), SVG::TT::Graph (https://metacpan.org/module/SVG::TT::Graph) and quite a few others. One of these days, I should do a show and compare between them all. * As for Javascript solutions, I'm currently using dygraphs (http://dygraphs.com/), but there is also highcharts (http://www.highcharts.com/) I want to play with at some time... mostly because of the purtiness. I can confirm that the perl hacks ebook is good, and I'm going through a work library copy of mastering perl, now, and so far it is also good.
