From rick at rixsoft.com Thu Mar 4 13:16:05 1999 From: rick at rixsoft.com (Rick Osborne) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:08:27 2004 Subject: Orlando Perl Mongers Message-ID: <4.1.19990304140910.00a13f10@spacey.net> Good afternoon, all. I have some bad news. :( My recruitment for Orlando Perl Mongers in the Central Florida area has met with very limited success. However, I am continuing to try and find new people to harass, uhh, recruit. Because of such a low membership count, I think I am going to put my plans for a face-to-face on hold for a while until we have a significant number of faces. I would like to hear from some of the other group owners and how your efforts are going ... ? I am eager to get our group going and am open to pointers on how I can do this. I refuse to believe that only a half-dozen people in Central Florida use Perl. :) You may now rejoin your life, already in progress ... -- Rick Osborne From perlmonger at tampabay.pm.org Thu Mar 4 17:44:52 1999 From: perlmonger at tampabay.pm.org (Jules) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:08:27 2004 Subject: Orlando Perl Mongers In-Reply-To: <4.1.19990304140910.00a13f10@spacey.net>; from Rick Osborne on Thu, Mar 04, 1999 at 02:16:05PM -0500 References: <4.1.19990304140910.00a13f10@spacey.net> Message-ID: <19990304184452.G2302@hairy.bollocks.com> On Thu, Mar 04, 1999 at 02:16:05PM -0500, Rick Osborne wrote: |Good afternoon, all. You've built it and they will come. Just keep bashing out the occasional email every couple of weeks and scour DejaNews. Maybe contact some of the local ISPs (you know what a cheap bunch they are -- they're bound to be using Perl in some fashion). Do you have any local user groups you could send a message to? What about local Universities? Some Linux/*BSD hackers are lurking in a dorm somewhere just itching to pull themselves into the daylight. Hey, free pizza almost always works. I even got a mention in the local rag, the St. Petersburg Times, and that dragged in a couple of people. Ok, I write a weekly column for said paper and I must admit I abused my position to get the Ed to run it. And watch out for that "Cental Florida" thing. If they're in Lakeland, hands off as they're mine baby! Hehehe. |I would like to hear from some of the other group owners and how your |efforts are going ... ? Florida is the third most populated State (behind California and New York, if I'm not mistaken). So if your theory is correct, that would mean there are about ten people in California using it (excluding Larry Wall) and as many as 20 in NY. Get into those funky square ones in the middle and I bet it even falls into negative numbers. Or perhaps thats where all the Tcl and Python folks live. -- "One World, One Web, One Program" - Microsoft Promotional Ad "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer" - Adolf Hitler From chowse at mdcc.edu Fri Mar 5 08:33:17 1999 From: chowse at mdcc.edu (charles howse) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:08:27 2004 Subject: Orlando Perl Mongers References: <4.1.19990304140910.00a13f10@spacey.net> Message-ID: <36DFEB2D.AE5D656D@mdcc.edu> Hello Rick, I would not call that bad news! It seems to me you are now in charge of two groups: the local orlando.pm, and this new statewide email based group. And with 6 people in orlando, you are way ahead of miami.pm. recruitment? whats that? I have had two local people email me, and I have emailed them with url of web page, but neither has 'joined'. I'm Not Thru Planning how to go about recruiting... other than putting up a web page.. The local paper has weekly 'computers' column with mentions of new web pages.. I will at some point ask them to include the miami.pm.org page, to see if that shakes loose any local users. I work at a community college, and know of zero PERL users here (one if you count me). I also plan to contact academic computer lab types at the other local Universities to see if they have any interested people. In reading some of the other pm group pages, I notice some have never had a f2f and see no need to. Perhaps someone in FL could volunteer to organize a chat session sometime to create a 'virtual' statewide meeting? cch miami ps (why am I shown as rchcharles?) ----------------------------------- Rick Osborne wrote: > Good afternoon, all.
