-ponder-   I've always used

    open(IN, $file)

or gone full OO w/

    use FileHandle;
    my $fh = FileHandle->new;

I'm not hep to your voodoo. "perldoc -f open" still seems to use my  
"old-style" too. I must be old if my Perl 5 methods are outdated  
before Perl 5 is.  :)

Ah, $ARGV is very cool! I knew the rest of that but hadn't learned  
$ARGV. Thanks!
