Monitoring SIG XV: Nagios 3.0

 

A very special SIG: Ethan Galstad, project lead for Nagios, will be in
from Minnesota to talk about the features of the newly-released Nagios
3.0.  He'll also be available to field your questions about Nagios in
general and where it's headed.

 

What: BayLISA Monitoring SIG XV: Nagios 3.0

Who: Anyone interested in IT monitoring issues and tools (newbies
particularly welcome!)

When: Wednesday, April 9 2008, 7PM

Where: GroundWork Open Source, 139 Townsend St., San Francisco

How: 139 Townsend St. is very near AT&T Ballpark. It is one and a half
blocks from the CalTrain Depot. Take the MUNI T or N trolley to 2nd and
King (ballpark stop) or take the 30 or 45 bus (among others) crosstown.
Allow extra travel time as the Giants are playing a home game that
evening (vs. the Padres, 7:15PM start) so all the streets, sidewalks,
and public transit around our office will be packed. DO NOT DRIVE unless
you're willing to sit in gridlock and pay exorbitant amounts for
parking.

Cost: Free!!

 

Piping hot pizza, fridge cold pop, and room temperature snacks provided
by GroundWork. We'll open up the doors at 6:30 or so and start the
formal part of the meeting promptly at 7PM.

my bad. 
i didn't check any of the links before forwarding.

thanks for bringing the problem to my attention.

on my email program,
many of the links are divided across lines.
that could be the problem.
when i assembled one of the links from its pieces, 
it worked.
when i used the complete url [including line breaks],
that worked too.
 
if i was interested in some of the books,
i'd probably:
* look for the book on the manning site.
* or do a google search [or searches] for info on it.

With the iPhone quickly becoming the market leader in mobile devices, the
need for law enforcement personnel to perform forensic analysis of these
devices is beginning to surface. Unlike most other smart phones, the
iPhone incorporates desktop-like features in an easy-to-use mobile
package. As a result of its high level of technology and available
features, many are likely to use it as a primary device for various forms
of data and communication. While some of a suspect's data can be viewed
using the direct GUI interfaces in the iPhone's software, much hidden and
deleted data is available as well, which may provide for more thorough
evidence gathering.

Existing commercial forensic tools are sadly lacking their ability to
perform deep raw disk level recovery, and so Jonathan will demonstrate how
to install his custom forensics toolkit on any existing model iPhone and
send a raw disk image to a desktop machine. He will also show you how to
recover files specific to the iPhone including deleted keyboard caches,
photos, web objects, and much more.

Jonathan's custom forensics toolkit and his accompanying forensic manual
will be available free to forensic investigators in law enforcement.

Internet email is in a process of rapid evolution. Besides the obvious
things, such as spam and malware, many other technology trends are
having an impact. These include mobile devices, new messaging
technologies, social networking, changing legal requirements, the rise
of Software as a Service and Service Oriented Architectures, and an
unstable underpinning of the network itself. Not surprisingly, many of
these same forces do or will affect other parts of the network.  This
talk will describe these evolutionary pressures, point out some of the
unexpected consequences of our attempts to adapt to these pressures,
and make some dire predictions for the future.  Generous time will be
allotted to Q&A.

Eric Allman[1] created and authored sendmail[2], spearheads
sendmail.org[3], and is Chief Science Officer[4] and co-founder of
Sendmail, Inc.[5]  Sendmail remains the most popular mail transfer
agent (MTA) on the Internet.  Eric co-authored the draft specification
for DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM)[6].  Among his work and
contributions, Eric was also Chief Programmer on the INGRES Relational
Database Management System and an early contributor to Berkeley UNIX,
authoring syslog, tset, the troff -me macros, and trek in addition to
sendmail.

With so much at stake, it's encouraging that the FCC is seeking public
feedback. But at the agency's last hearing near Boston, cable giant
Comcast paid people off the street to fill the seats. As a result,
more than 100 local citizens were turned away at the door.

We need to show Comcast and other would-be gatekeepers that the public
will not be blocked or silenced. Come to Stanford and be heard!
