It was a great success. At the end of last year Edmund approached the EPO with the task of organising a similar event this year as he was unable to because of other commitments. Therefore I come to you all to ask you to donate once again to this excellent project, please make a donation at send-a-newbie.enlightenedperl.org (or send your donation to send-a-newbie at paypal.com). If you made a donation last year, I thank you and would gratefully ask for you to do so once more.[1] If you are new to this idea allow me a few moments to describe it. The send-a-newbie scheme will allow people to attend a Perl conference (YAPC::EU for us, and this year YAPC::NA will have a scheme organised by the Perl Foundation) if: a. they have never attended a YAPC/Major Perl event previously; b. they are financially unable to do so; c. they work in/study/use Perl. The only changes we have made to the terms of entry this year is to broaden the scope. The Enlightened Perl Organisation members voted that we manage this initiative on the sole condition that it was open to all people regardless of age or circumstance (there were some minor restrictions in the previous year that did not reflect our requirements). This year we will be listing our sponsors on the website to express our thanks[2] and because we believe in openess of information. A list of names will appear that people can admire and give respect[3]. If you would like to/do donate and don't want your name listed then please contact Mark or Rosellyne and let them know and they will ensure that you are not listed. Thanks for your consideration, and thanks-in-advance to those who are considering donating. Kind regards Mark Secretary to the EPO p.s. If you know of any list, forum where this information might be posted then I would kindly ask that you repeat it there. p.p.s Sorry if this is a repost for some of you (or you see multiple copies of it) - please do not let you stop from donating. [1] Please, please, pretty please on bended knees :) [2] An almost exact opposite of name and shame. [3] Also they can perhaps feel sickened that they were too jaded to support such a great idea. I'm deep in the middle of "modernizing" my perl-self, seeking to de-old-school myself. If anyone is around and willing to have a cup of coffee and I'l like to compare notes about "modern" perl, current "relevant" perl skill sets and contract work vs full-time/permanent work. Since this will mark my twentieth year of working with Perl, I figured I'd put the pdf copy of my original, first edition, first print "Camel" book on my web site for download and look-see: http://www.josjr.com/download/pdf/Perl_First_Edition_January_1991.pdf I had to special order it at the Barnes and Noble in Roseville in the winter of 1990-91. I now have an instance of Catalyst server in place on my new "cloud" virtual personal server running: http://s15338188.onlinehome-server.com:3000/ http://josjr.com/ Now that my course is over, the server is in place and I've put some big requests for the University behind me I can start plowing through the mountain of new technologies that been integrated beneath the hood of Catalyst and whatever cooperating client frameworks are running in the browsers (JavaScript [Ajax, ExtJS, jQuery], CSS, XHTML, XML, XSLT, etc). I have a number of applications I want to build in Catalyst; Tools for Writers Kindle Resources Publication search engine for Writers (gather submission guidelines and organize them in a database for writers, presented by genre). I have scanned and OCR-ed all of my technical books and I am now in the process of creating Kindle ebooks (prc, Mobipocket creator) of them. With my eyes it is very difficult to read physical books, so the Kindle, with it's eink and network connectivity have been wonderful in my Catalyst/JavaScript explorations... There is a natural language/speech researcher at the University who is interested in collaborating on adapting some of his web-deployed tools within the Catalyst framework. I would also, and probably first, like to develop some interactive Catalyst tutorials that would help those interested (like me) to get past the initial, somewhat overwhelming learning curve of Catalyst, ORM, etc. I will start by integrating examples for various tutorials on the web and develop some of my own. If any of you have some simple Catalyst-deployed applications that would be good candidates for incorporation into on-line tutorials send them my way. Personally, in spite of the abrupt shock of being laid off and the up-coming insecurity that I will be facing as August approaches, I am excited about taking a fresh look at these world of Perl that never seizes to amaze me. Anyway, if there is anyone meeting tonight let me know. Meanwhile, back to my retreading... Its purpose is to better understand the demographics and opinions of the Perl community. You can complete the survey at http://survey.perlfoundation.org - it should take about 10 to 15 minutes. Once you've done that, please let your relevant friends and colleagues know about the survey so they can coplete it as well. My aim is to get a response of over 1000 individuals, and to run the survey (lightly adapted) every two or three years so we can see how the community changes over time.
