I'm pleasantly surprised that it doesn't seem very hard to re-implement the 
building of XS modules.  I haven't yet done anything about compiling .c 
files that the .xs files might depend on, though.

I think I'll try taking a bunch of existing modules from CPAN and 
converting them to use Module::Build, and see what kinds of things they 
need.
