From I.A.Cameron at open.ac.uk Thu Jan 7 04:02:16 2010 From: I.A.Cameron at open.ac.uk (Ian Cameron) Date: Thu, 07 Jan 2010 12:02:16 +0000 Subject: January techical meeting Message-ID: Hello MKPMers, I'm looking for people who are interested in giving a talk at the January MKPM technical meeting. Your talk can be a long one of around 20 minutes, or a shorter (lightning) one of around 5 minutes. If you have any interesting work or private projects on the go that you think may be of interest to other people in the group, I'd love to hear from you. If there's anything else you think might be of interest, such as "I played with this recently", or you have a talk that you've given elsewhere, I'd love to hear from you. No date has been set for the meeting yet, but I'll get in touch with speakers to try and arrange a convenient time for all. So far I have: Long: Tom Hukins, "Do Repeat Yourself. Sometimes." - a talk Tom gave at a recent LPW meeting: http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2009/talk/2458 Lightning: Colin Bradford, HTTP::Async - a lightning talk on using the HTTP::Async module for parallel HTTP requests: http://search.cpan.org/~evdb/HTTP-Async-0.09/lib/HTTP/Async.pm Thanks in advance. -- Cheers, Ian. The Open University is incorporated by Royal Charter (RC 000391), an exempt charity in England & Wales and a charity registered in Scotland (SC 038302). Also, this gives speakers plenty of time to plan presentations. Finally, don't forget tomorrow evening's social meeting in Wetherspoon's. If you haven't been before, or think you might have trouble recognising us, please ask off-list for my phone number. Arrive at 7pm so the first talk can start promptly at 7.15. This meeting is open to regular group members, newcomers and anyone else who would like to listen to the talks. If you can think of anyone who might like to come, please invite them. There are two main talks and two lightning talks scheduled for this meeting. Main talks: Ziya Suzen: === Practical Android Development - An Introduction === This introduction should give you a general understanding of the platform and A PIs as well as basic knowledge on where to start and how to design your application s. * What is Android * The Framework and APIs * Setting up your environment * Hello World * More on the UI - View's and Layouts * Services and Content providers * Using the features on the devices * Quick tips on using Eclipse and Java Oliver Gorwits: "conntrack, Netfilter, NetFlow and NAT under Linux" Large scale NAT (up to thousands of clients) is very possible with Linux, but often there will be an associated requirement to monitor user activity for policy compliance purposes. In this talk I'll show how we use the built-in tools Linux offers within its Netfilter subsystem, along with some software we developed to export NetFlow traffic analysis data. Lightning talks: Tom Hukins: "Do Repeat Yourself. Sometimes." - a talk Tom gave at a recent LPW meeting: http://conferences.yapceurope.org/lpw2009/talk/2458 Colin Bradford: HTTP::Async - a talk on using the HTTP::Async module for parall el HTTP requests: http://search.cpan.org/~evdb/HTTP-Async-0.09/lib/HTTP/Async.pm Thanks to all who are giving talks for their time and effort. I'm certainly looking forward to hearing them. Finally, remember to arrive at the OU for 7pm on Tuesday 9th of February. Here's how to find us: First, find the OU campus as described at http://www3.open.ac.uk/contact/locations.aspx Enter the campus (signposted Open University, not Open University East), via Brickhill Street (V10). Take the middle lane past Security (on the left), through the barriers, and then turn right on to Ring Road East. Ahead you will see the road narrows to single lane on your side of the road, where there are no entry signs. Just prior to this is the entrance to a car park on the left (marked Inner East Parking on the campus map). Take this left turn and head to the top left (North West on the campus map) of the car park. The meeting is in the south east section of the Venables Building, nearest the Inner East Parking on the campus map. Take the path (marked in orange on the campus map) west from the car park toward the centre of campus. Take a right under an archway in to the courtyard area bound by Venables South, East, and South East, keeping right (heading North East on the campus map), behind the building section marked South East. You will find a double door on your right, which is Entrance G at the South East section of Venables Building. We'll see you there, as these are usually access controlled doors, so you will probably need to be let in. If you haven't attended one of our meetings at the OU before, you might want to ask for someone's phone number in case you have trouble finding us. If you need a lift to the meeting, please ask our mailing list or IRC channel (see http://miltonkeynes.pm.org/ for details). See you on the 9th. - -- Cheers, Ian. Thanks, I enjoyed last night's meeting after I missed December's. We had a good turn-out and I enjoyed talking to lots of people, although I didn't get a chance to say hello to everyone. Mostly I ended up talking about non-technical things, but I enjoyed Peter's demonstration of one of Ziya's Android apps (I'm looking forward to the talk on this in 2 weeks). Does anyone have any interesting revelations or discussions they'd like to share? See you at the technical meeting on the 9th, Tom
