To: pm_groups at pm.org Cc: Jonathan Leto Hi all, Please forward this to your local groups. The Perl Foundation has been officially accepted into the Google Summer of Code 2009 program as a mentor organization! Hopefully some of you have identified some potential students already. Now we need your help getting them to submit their proposals. http://leto.net/dukeleto.pl/2009/03/tpf-accepted-to-google-summer-of-code-2009.html The student application period begins Monday, March 23rd and runs through April 3rd. ?(Students note: ?you can edit your proposal throughout that 11-day period -- getting it started early and talking to potential mentors greatly increases your chances vs throwing it over the wall at the deadline.) ?See this page for details: ?http://code.google.com/soc/ Interested students and potential mentors, please read the GSoC info on the Perl wiki: ?http://www.perlfoundation.org/perl5/index.cgi?gsoc ?http://www.perlfoundation.org/perl5/index.cgi?gsoc_2009_projects If you're interested in mentoring or have a good project suggestion, now is the time to get your info up on the wiki so students will know about your code and where to find you. Talking about places... ....I know a nice pub, they even have tables outside in a private internal garden; it's in via Ortica (pretty close to Lambrate's station); the place's name is Giardini della Birra. It's kinda popular, so I guess that some of you already heard the name. But an understanding of context is surely more useful than an ability to solve multiple-choice trivia about list operators in the core language. And to judge a "senior", I'd be looking at design, OO, knowledge of CPAN, database, web, unicode, debugging, and many other skills. It was first designed to job interviews. The idea at that moment was to have a set of tests to the candidats in multiple areas. Most of the candidates say that are experts in a set of technologies, and this test shall show that a person have good knowledge of Perl. It was important not asking for question specific to a certain set of CPAN packages, since a good software developer can learn any package. The interviews were done with 4 to 5 persons, for 3 to 4 hours, if the person cost 35?/hour, we are speaking of ~500?. Like this the candidates where having a fast interview with one person, and after if the candidate was passing (25%) he was having the full team interview. I have done some interviews of supposed experts and losing to much time for nothing. After 15 minutes I was already giving up of them, but I was there for 3 hours. Note: It's a place where you are well paid but it's very hard to enter. You need to be really good. I received some very good news from another monger in the, that I will distribute. Max has a place for the First Tech-Meeting, near Piazza Cadorna. So now we need at least 3 persons willing to speak for about 20 to 30 min. I have already 3 presentations +- prepared to do, about: Beautify Perl with perltidy Beautify Perl with perlcritic Perl 5.10 We may have many other subjects like: Perl Monger History/Work/... <-<-<-<-<-------- Volunteers please Perl in the Web Perl for System Administrators Automatic Code Generation with Perl Perl DBI/DBD Useful one liners Inline::C Perl XS Perl Multi threading Debugging Perl Testing Perl Perl internals The Mason Framework The Catalyst Framework Perl 6 Genetics with Perl ... It is a good politics to look in the other groups, take ideas, but please do your slides. Note: the speaker shall present in Italian when they can (I'll try), even if the slides may be in English. Remember that having the slides in English, will help you to disperse the information.
