I'd like to offer you free tickets. These include morning/afternoon tea and lunch each day, free entry to the conference dinner (Wed night) and a great chance to meet people and learn new things from speakers from across the world. In return, we ask that you give us 2.5 hours per day of assistance at the registration desk. Your job there will be to greet attendees, answer any questions that come up, give out T-shirts and conference bags as necessary and do a lot of smiling. If this seems like a fun opportunity (Randal Schwartz and Damian Conway will both be giving keynotes, cog (Jose Castro) will be visiting from Portugal and Adam Kennedy from Sydney; then please contact myself and Debbie (CC-ed into this email) and we'll arrange the details. :) If you can't join us, but would like to be invited to any dinner we organise on the Thursday night, please let me know and I'll keep you informed (unless it's a last-minute thing). My name is Josh Heumann, and I'm about to be an American expatriot, living in your city. I'm a recent ex-leader of the perlmonger group in Portland, Oregon, and am interested in knowing more about how the mongers meet in Melbourne. I've read melbourne.pm.org, and the perl.net wiki page, but they both seem a little out of date. Is the group still meeting? The melbourne.pm.org page varies in how regularly it gets kept up to date. Mostly this is my fault. The Perl.net wiki page also varies, but with more hands available usually not quite so much. If you look at the meeting history: http://perl.net.au/wiki/Melbourne_Perl_Mongers/Meeting_History_2006 You'll see that we had a meeting just a month ago. :) Unfortunately these write-ups only appear if someone is eager enough to add them which means that there are a few missing for the year. But in answer to your questions, yes we are still having meetings. We meet every month on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in North Melbourne (although every fourth meeting will be for OSDClub instead). Actually, Josh is probably coming from the Perl capital of the USA. At Pdx-pm, he was leading such Perl luminaries as Randal Schwartz, Alison Randal, chromatic, Schwern, Ovid, Ingy, Tom Phoenix, Tonya Harding, Monica Lewinsky, ... Jacinta, Josh may be able to help you with recruiting new members to Melb.pm. He seemed to show a flair for that sort of thing in Portland, judging by this post: http://mail.pm.org/pipermail/pdx-pm-list/2004-January/000957.html where he invented an innovative new recruiting technique: spy some Perl books through the window of your neighbor (binoculars recommended), then invite him along, first warning all the other mongers that under no circumstances are they to tell him where the pdx-pm mailing list archives are to be found. ;-) Cheers, /-\ Send instant messages to your online friends http://au.messenger.yahoo.com From jarich at perltraining.com.au Sun Dec 17 17:45:41 2006 From: jarich at perltraining.com.au (Jacinta Richardson) Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 12:45:41 +1100 Subject: [Melbourne-pm] Next meeting? Message-ID: <4585F2C5.9080102@perltraining.com.au> This year (2006) we had our first January meeting, on the third Wednesday (18th). For this meeting we held a night of lightning talks (and not quite so lightning). One of the big reasons we had the January meeting was that our February meeting was going to be taken up with OSDClub. Next year's February meeting is available to us (14th Feb) as the PHP group is hosting the OSDClub meeting. Does anyone want to also have a January meeting? It could be a social get together, a BBQ, lightning talks, pizza and movie night.... whatever you want to suggest.
