There have been some recent developments on the YAPC::NA front, and it has been suggested to us that a reminder might be helpful to some people, so here's a quick summary of the event. Summary ------- YAPC::NA 2005 (Yet Another Perl Conference, North America) in Toronto, Canada, Monday - Wednesday 27 - 29, June 2005 Home page: http://yapc.org/America/ Conference Location: http://89chestnut.com/ A facility of the University of Toronto Accommodations -------------- Normally registration information would come first, but accommodations are the bottleneck -- our main group reservation (at the conference hotel) expires at the end of the week, and as the conference approaches it will be extremely difficult to find a hotel anywhere in the city. Info on how to book at: http://yapc.org/America/accommodations-2005.shtml Registration ------------ Register now! :-) We are on track to break attendance records at YAPC::NA this year, and we could even sell out before the conference starts. The price for the full 3 days is USD$85. We keep it insanely low through many generous sponsorships and the all-volunteer organizational and speaking crews. Registration info: http://yapc.org/America/register-2005.shtml Direct registration link: http://donate.perlfoundation.org/index.pl?node=registrant%20info&conference_id=423 Conference Speaking Schedule ---------------------------- We've got an excellent selection of talks and speakers for Perl programmers of all levels, beginner through expert. We are fortunate enough to have presentations coming from some of the most recognizable names in Perl programming today, including Larry Wall, Chip Salzenberg, Dan Sugalski, Autrijus Tang and brian d foy. If you're interested please read more about them and sign up: http://www.justanotherperlhacker.org/lightning/ [ This message was sent by Gerard Lim on behalf of the YAPC::NA 2005 Conference organizing committee of the Toronto Perl Mongers. He is planning a 2-3 hour tutorial on all things mod_perl 2 at our June Meeting 8th June 2005. Stas is happy to do this for free, however we could also get together pay him a small gratuity to at least help with the costs of coming all the way from Canada. Alternately we could shout him dinner and a few drinks afterwards (if the kitchen is still open). Make sure you tell your friends and work mates, as Stas is an excellent speaker and you probably won't get a better deal on learning things about mod_perl 2. Should your work place be interested in hiring Stas for some mod_perl consulting let him know and I'm sure he'd be happy to help. He has a business visa for this visit so you shouldn't have any problems in that regard. Stas can be contacted via stas at stason.org. As Stas has a business visa it should be both legal and tax deductable to pay to attend the session. All Stas needs to do is provide you with a receipt for the payment. You should be able to treat this receipt just like you would any receipt/invoice you got from any other Australian entity for a conference, business event or similar. Of course if you don't ask for a receipt then you can't claim it, but being the honest person he is, Stas will still have to tell the ATO at the end of this financial year how much he received. Unless something really strange happens, it'll probably be under $6000 so he won't actually have to pay tax on it. > If people feel uncofortable with knowing the amounts or paying at all, > I suggest we put some envelopes at the door and allow people to make > anonymous donations to Stas on the night Sounds sensible. Alternately people can put their donation in with their postal details and I'll be happy to organise receipts going out to them. This means that they don't tell *everyone* what they're donating, but they still get the tax benefits. > - hopefully it will encourage Stas to come back next > time - and for people to sign up for the excellent talks that was > planned by Perl Training Austarlia (I am disapointed that they won't be > on - so everyone - come and at least help Stas on the night). But this was planned to be a free talk, so thank you, but I won't accept any money :) The fact that the tutorials that were supposed to pay some of my travel expenses didn't come through doesn't discourage me. I'll be giving some 15+ various mod_perl talks this summer (mostly free), so it's not like I won't have any other opportunity to improve my presentation skills :) > Make sure you tell your friends and work mates, as Stas is an excellent speaker > and you probably won't get a better deal on learning things about mod_perl 2. > Should your work place be interested in hiring Stas for some mod_perl consulting > let him know and I'm sure he'd be happy to help. Though, to be perfectly honest, nothing I'm going to talk about is likely to be a big surprise to anyone who follows the tech news and can draw logical conclusions from the trend towards technological convergence and the burgeoning importance of the information economy over traditional goods and services.
