(MyInternet House, Blackwood St) Apparently we have 2 short talks already lined up which gives us about another hour to fill. If you're presenting a talk at the OSDC this year now's a good time to practice it in front of a friendly audience. Remember that there are only 3 PM meetings (including this one) left before the conference. If noone else volunteers themselves for a talk, lightning, short or long, then I'm sure I can find some topics to talk about. :) All the best, Jacinta Richardson -- ("`-''-/").___..--''"`-._ | Jacinta Richardson | `6_ 6 ) `-. The new date is: Perl Security - 22nd October 2004 This course had the highest overall rating of all tutorials presented at the SAGE-AU 2004 conference. It is a seminar style course with lots of time for questions. The Perl Security course covers how to improve the security of your Perl programs. It includes discussion on taint checking, securely creating and opening files, race conditions, sym-link attacks and other common pitfalls. This course has been designed for both system administrators with some Perl programming experience and for programmers who develop in Perl. It has a strong Unix (and Unix-like) bias in parts but the bulk of the material applies to all operating systems. You can book places on this course on our bookings page at: http://www.perltraining.com.au/bookings.html Group discounts apply. If you book and pay by 24th September 2004 you will be entitled to our early bird special of one free Perl book, of your choice, per person. The available books are listed at: http://www.perltraining.com.au/books.html Mention Melbourne Perl Mongers when you book for an additional $30 per person discount. Or alternatively, recommend this course to your friends and collegues and if they book (and mention you when booking) *you* will get a free Perl book (of your choice) up to the value of $80 RRP (hand delivered to you at the next PM meeting). This is in addition to any books and discounts they may also be entitled to. I look forward to seeing you on the course. See you there. The Time: 6.30 pm The Venue: myinternet House, Level 8, 14 Blackwood Street, North Melbourne - Simon Jacinta Richardson: OSDC update Becky Alcorn: HTML::Tooltip::Javascript (20mins) A new module providing an easy perl interface to Walter Zorn's javascript tooltip library. (this is a test-run of an OSDC talk Simon Taylor: Text::PhraseDistance and others. (7 mins) Measuring the degree of proximity of 2 phrases Leif Eriksen: Forcing Failure (main talk) Abstract: Say you've written a module that at some point calls 'fork()'. At that point your code tests the return from fork to workout if it is in the parent or child process. Additionally, you have code to handle fork failing - say due to insufficient resources. You want to test your module, and specifically write a test case that demonstrates the correctness of the code you've written to handle a fork failure. How do you force fork() to fail ?? It really hard to do, harder to do reliably, and even harder if you try to do it on different OS. This talk is about making any perl low level system call (like read, close etc) fail exactly how you want, even down to the error text returned. Additionally, writing test cases and performing coverage testing in Perl is discussed. While the GPL and its 'copyleft' principle became a model for later 'Open Source' software licences now in wide use, the original emphasizes the importance of preserving with the work a number of important freedoms to use the work, rather than merely requiring open access to the source code.
