From merlyn at stonehenge.com Mon Oct 4 17:51:01 2010 From: merlyn at stonehenge.com (Randal L. Schwartz) Date: Mon, 04 Oct 2010 17:51:01 -0700 Subject: [LA.pm] speaker for oct 13 meeting? Message-ID: <86wrpx4g3u.fsf@red.stonehenge.com> I'm woefully distracted with getting my house ready to be vacated up here in Oregon this past week, and realized I've done nothing about setting up a speaker for the Oct 13 meeting at Oversee. Would people object to a lightning talk format? I can certainly also (in addition to, or instead of) provide any one of my many hour-long presentations as well... perhaps even voted on by the attendees. Or we can have "Q & A with Randal" or something crazy like that. Given the previous discussion, one idea would be to have you all bring your craziest technical interview questions (given or heard), and I can try to solve them, and give you feedback on how sucky the question is? :) Or we can just take turns reading pages from thedailywtf.com. I'll also have details about getting in to the building shortly. It was sent to me as a word doc (gah), so I'm having to pick out the juicy bits and ascii-ize them. (There's a WTF for ya... have you ever been forced to convert your ASCII resume into a word doc simply because it was required?) -- Randal L. AnyEvent -- Perl Asynchronous Programming * Event driven programming has been a powerful paradigm for years, but it's emerging as an increasingly important way to work. Making events easy is part of what has made node.js so exciting, and is possible in Python with Eventlet and Ruby with EventMachine. Perl's answer to this is very mature and flexible: AnyEvent. As well as an introduction to the module, how to use it, and some of the other modules in the "family", we'll cover some before/after examples of synchronous code made asynchronous. 1 2 3 4 5 Not Interested Super Interested Perl Dancer Micro-framework * As awesome and powerful as it is, nobody "casually" starts building a Catalyst app. Dancer is inspired by Ruby's Sinatra and turns the friction knob way, way down -- you can get your perl code speaking HTTP in minutes. It was surprising that there were only 2 of us. I took a survey of the platforms being used and Rails was by far the most widely used. There were 2 Python, 1 Catalyst/perl, 1 PHP, 1 .Net. Are y'all interested? I had a bid in to stage Nov. at Media Temple in Culver City (8520 National, 90232), and hadn't heard back from Andrew, I see from his blog he is in Aloha mode so that may have something to do with it. As far as content Josh Barratt had polled the list with two potential topics and I can't remember which one won but he is good to go. Assuming it lands at Media Temple, I was planning to draft one more local monger for quick talk to bring in some fresh blood(y brains), and if someone else had something that would make for a fun filled, informative meetup. So perhaps Andrew will come out of the woodwork and make the call. Thanks, Jordan On Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 4:56 PM, Randal L. Our old homepage at openwebmail.org has been taken hostage by the guy who registered it. He is now link-farming the site and making quite a bit of money from the pagerank everyone's work has given his domain (over $2400 this month so far). He will not grant us any access to change the site and refuses to stop link-farming it. I've wanted to bring it up at several of the last meetings, but I've missed them due to a new baby at home. I'd really appreciate your input as I'm not sure what to do. We've got a release coming up after two years of hard work and I'd really prefer not to fork the project. I've tried contacting google to make them aware of his abuse of the pagerank that was built up by open source contributors, to no avail. Is anyone aware of an open source project's homepage being hijacked like this in the past? How did they handle it? Thanks, Alex P.S.- You can see how much money he's made here: http://www.openwebmail.org/donation "support payments" he says :(
