I have some answers in my head, based on my experience, as well as my
understanding of the internals.  (As well as whether or not this is
actually a useful place to make things faster..)

But, instead of giving you dinner, I shall teach you to fish.  (Wow,
that sounds a little trite.  It's not intended that way.)

See the Benchmark module and write some tests to see.
(And then run them on various platforms and perl versions.)
