All venues are University or affiliated, with identified dorm or other inexpensive housing nearby. Each has easy access from an international airport, capacity for 300+ people in a single auditorium or three simultaneous tracks, and network (cabled and wireless) access. Location and Staff: - All Groups have excellent credentials and a motivated group of volunteers. Each would be disappointed if another were selected, but are open to hosting 2004 if possible. - All three bids are Eastern during Academic holiday at Universities - Ottawa Carleton May 15-17 Lead: Jay Lawrence - DC GWU May 28-30 Lead: Adam Turoff - Boca Raton FAU June 17-20 Lead: Kevin Meltzer Issues include: - Expecting limited sponsorship this year: Economy sucks, hard to give. Has to be user funded, under $100/per, with speakers (50/300) not=20 paying. Expect 300-350 people. - Location Density of Perlers: DC wins here. Toss-up between Ottawa=20 and Boca after that. - US/Canada Border: Considered minor. Travel across is routine again. - Timing (including Dorm Room and Grounds constraints) Had to stay away from Perl Whirl and OSCon, giving: - Cost - Printing is cheaper in Canada - Grounds/AV: Ottawa ~=3D Boca, DC more expensive - Catering equivalent across venues (Scaled to costs allowed) (Can't we just have a potluck for dinner one night?) - Local interest -- All three are excellent on this point. All sites and representatives are sincere, reliable, and able. All bids are excellent. We would like to hear your collective thoughts on the merits of each as we move to decision over the next days. Timing, price, and perler=20 density appear to be key considerations, all other things being equal. But - CPK doesn't take reservations and they're expecting to be busy on Sat the 21st around Lunchtime. They might hold a space for us for 15 minutes or so, but that will require an amazing amount of coordination on our part, which might not be the best idea. So - Does anyone have any restaurant suggestions? Criteria: - Should take reservations - Open Sat Dec 21st, Lunchtime - Good for groups of 8-15. - Relatively easy to get to - Has alternatives for any of our members with special dietary needs/concerns/etc. -R From darkuncle at darkuncle.net Tue Dec 10 19:57:48 2002 From: darkuncle at darkuncle.net (Scott Francis) Date: Mon Aug 2 21:31:52 2004 Subject: [LA.pm] Holiday Event In-Reply-To: <15862.33296.572094.947096@rls.cx> References: <15847.63830.430909.304530@rls.cx> <15862.33296.572094.947096@rls.cx> Message-ID: <20021211015748.GC6959@darkuncle.net> On Tue, Dec 10, 2002 at 04:08:48PM -0800, rspier@pobox.com said: > > Ok, > > I had one request for CPK (http://www.californiapizzakitchen.com/) > because one LAPM member said: > > "They have the best BBQ chicken pizza ever" raising my hand here. :) > But - CPK doesn't take reservations and they're expecting to be busy > on Sat the 21st around Lunchtime. Or ... one or two of us show up when we tell them we're coming, and we sit at the table and wait for most everybody to show up. We can just RSVP on the list here, and I volunteer to be the one to show up first. :) The CPK I was thinking of is at 12255 Ventura Blvd just east of Whitsett Blvd (west of Laurel Canyon). http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=12265+Ventura+Blvd.&csz=91604&country=us&Get%A0Map=Get+Map > So - > > Does anyone have any restaurant suggestions? > > Criteria: > - Should take reservations I think we can work around that - I mean, if we have to wait, we just sit outside and chat, which we'd be doing inside over food anyway. :) > - Open Sat Dec 21st, Lunchtime > - Good for groups of 8-15. > - Relatively easy to get to check, check, check > - Has alternatives for any of our members with special dietary > needs/concerns/etc. CPK has vegan and vegetarian options (_several_ of them, actually). Not to mention pasta, salad and sandwiches, besides a few dozen varieties of great pizza! Probably one of my favorite pizza places overall. Pretty reasonable prices too - around ten bucks for dinner. > -R -- -= Scott Francis || darkuncle (at) darkuncle (dot) net =- GPG key CB33CCA7 has been revoked; I am now 5537F527 illum oportet crescere me autem minui -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
