From rbowen at rcbowen.com Tue Feb 11 08:06:34 2003 From: rbowen at rcbowen.com (Rich Bowen) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:06:13 2004 Subject: LPM: Keysigning Message-ID: For those of you that don't frequent the IRC channel, an announcement. There is a keysigning scheduled for 7pm, Thursday the 13th, to be held at the Barnes & Noble at Hamburg Pavillion. Please come, bring a printout of your Key ID and fingerprint, and photo identification. Come get linked into the web of trust. We'll have a few folks there that are well-connected in the web, and folks coming in from out of town for the event. I'm also CC'ing this to the Perl Mongers list, which, although it is moderately dead, still might contain a person or two who would be interested in attending. OK, so it turns out that it will be much closer to 7:30. But there's a nice coffee shop there, so come early if you want, and participate in geek talk. > Please come, bring a printout of your Key ID and fingerprint, and photo > identification. What is this all about? Are you talking about police-style fingerprints, or some kind of digital signature? Are you talking about police-style fingerprints, or some kind of digital signature? GPG (aka PGP) keys. It's a digital signature, used for encryting, or signing, email or files. See http://gnypg.org/ for the full scoop. It's a Good Thing. It also lets you verify software distributions - you'll notice that many free software distros come with a .asc file, which is the digital signature on that file. > > Curious and confused, > -dave > > > At 09:06 AM 2/11/2003, Rich Bowen allegedly wrote: > >For those of you that don't frequent the IRC channel, an announcement. > > > >There is a keysigning scheduled for 7pm, Thursday the 13th, to be held > >at the Barnes & Noble at Hamburg Pavillion. > > > >Please come, bring a printout of your Key ID and fingerprint, and photo > >identification. It has taken me a while to get any grasp of this at all. The "keys" that are signed are digital signatures, and the keysigning is all about verifying other people's keys based on face-to-face contact and checking identification. 'Yes, this person is who he/she claims to be.' It's something of a growing subculture, based around PGP or GPG encryption programs. Those programs provide the keys to be signed.
