After upgrading perl and DBI to the most recent version with no success, I 
upgraded the SQL Server ODBC driver from 3.60 to 3.70, our problems 
(nearly) went away.  Our 255-ish character limit has been expanded to 
8000-ish characters...enough to keep us amused for a while.

Rich - I would still like to see the code you mentioned to get around this 
kind of problem
