Hi all,
I finally found the TIGER rendering app I was thinking of at the February
meeting. The language is called 'icon', and its homepage is:
http://www.cs.arizona.edu/icon/
They have a program called 'tgrmap' that takes the TIGER text files and
spits out a neatly rendered street map.

Recall that TIGER is the US Census free GIS database for practically all
surveyed line data in the 50 US states and DC. They have an online browser
at
http://www.census.gov/geo/www/tiger/
I hope someone can make something useful and Perl-y out of it!
