I am an independent contractor providing customized business applications using Perl/MySQL. Most of my career has been spent doing CPA type jobs such as Controller, CFO, and managing my own public practice. Six plus years ago I decided to try programming after seeing how effective customized web-based software was in controlling overhead for a client. I am using Conway's book "Perl Best Practices" as my main operational guide and Subversion as my version program. Most of the projects I do today are OO using Class::Std. My target clients are businesses that have multiple locations and sales between 10 and 100 million. My biggest problem is that I have not found an effective marketing method yet that makes the phone ring regularly. My interests are best practices, project planning, and Perl. I do not have any plans of changing to Ruby. Been in C, COBOL, RPG, Progress 4GL, and other older than dirt procedural langauges most of my IT career. I spend so much time trying to do everything barely know how to actually do anything. My biggest IT road block is OO programming =/ =\ =| But I'll live. My IT past - I built the Jacksonville Housing Authority AIX (and Unidata) Data Center in the mid 90's (I was number 100 in the Info World Top 100 IS Performers in 1995. Better than being number 101 I always say :-D I built the online Blackboard and WebCT class systems (mostly Solaris) infrastructure at FCCJ -- when I left in 2003 there were 25,000 students participating in about 800 online courses. I more or less specialize in Apache/Unix systems -- I'm in the iddle of rewriting the IT300 Web Server Administration course for ITT Technical Instritute (thru PearsonEd.) I'm actually located in Jacksonville -- I believe a lot of members are not. I have tried doing location surveys and stats but I think most members feel I am just gonna come over to where ever they are hiding and mooch more computer gear off them! I really don't understand this fixation you have about Jax.PM needing to be somehow geographically connected to Jax. :) By way of introduction, I'm a PhD student in information science at Drexel U in Philly. That pretty much sucks up all of my time. And then some. I use perl for my work when possible. I grew up in Jax, but haven't lived there since 1997. I don't check this email address as often as I should, which is why it took two weeks for me to respond. My hobbies include publicly harassing the Jax.PM moderator (hi, Sneex!) and buying Powerball tickets that won't match enough numbers to even cover my investment. j From chasecreek.systemhouse at gmail.com Thu Oct 27 06:30:31 2005 From: chasecreek.systemhouse at gmail.com (Chasecreek Systemhouse) Date: Thu, 27 Oct 2005 09:30:31 -0400 Subject: [Jax.PM] [Admin] Posting In-Reply-To: <435D93DB.7070502@persons.marlboro.edu> References: <1128837140.6064.29.camel@localhost.localdomain> <20051009115602.NSSK2767.eastrmmtao03.cox.net@Charley> <91f88ee20510101001qf3d92f0n89db74c45be85778@mail.gmail.com> <435D93DB.7070502@persons.marlboro.edu> Message-ID: <91f88ee20510270630m2b7e0247l8360b13aa3a228bf@mail.gmail.com> On 10/24/05, j proctor wrote: > [a jax.PM member posting] > > > I'm actually located in Jacksonville > I really don't understand this fixation you have about Jax.PM needing to > be somehow geographically connected to Jax. :) Um, welllll ... Last year I was turned down for a job at Yahoo because of this, when I knew everything they wanted about UNIX and DNS (the position was a DNS architect/DNS admin position). They asked me back for another interview, and yesterday when I was there I was able to write a couple correct Perl scripts on the board to parse simple logs and report stats, and validate a correct IP address. Strange thing was that I didn't practice in any way - I was simply able to do it this time. I don't know if it's because I don't really care if I get the offer this time (I just wanted to feel better about myself by getting an offer this time around, I don't really want to leave my job). Pretty weird. I always do well in interviews - I don't get tongue-tied or otherwise get stumped on things I'd normally know outside a pressure situation. It's just that damn whiteboard that seems to kick my butt. Anyone else encounter this sort of thing - or am I just weird? :) -- Nate curses: May you be forced to grep the termcap of an unclean yacc while a herd of rogue emacs fsck your troff and vgrind your pathalias!
