it does exactly what i'd expect it to do.  here's
a slightly appended-to example:

$ perl -le '(*a,*b,*c)=(\1,\2,\3); for ( @x = ($a,$b,$c) ) { $_++; print } print "$a $b $c"'
2
3
4
1 2 3
