No, the purpose is to get the content for storage elsewhere, not to get it quickly. This is much like how if I wanted to compromise your systems, I would want to do a little port scanning. I would never do fast portscans over many ports, I'd scan only a couple important ports from different hosts from at/cron jobs at random times from random hosts. A NIDS setup could almost never spot this when done right, and only a very paranoid person could figure out much from logs if this is done well. This sort of approach does start to breakdown in the context we're discussing it, needing thousands of files from a web server. Doing it slowly would really suck ;) -- Nate Jax.PM Moderator's Note: This message was posted to the Jacksonville Perl Monger's Group listserv. Such things are not unheard of in security circles these days (DDoS, anyone?). If that's the case, it's fairly easy to arrange a coordinated sweep of the site from widely disparate places. Over the course of a few hours, you could get every page without any particular host doing more than an obvious handful. Pepper the initial request with a bogus referer (search term from AltaVista or something), and you've still got the entire site. j Jax.PM Moderator's Note: This message was posted to the Jacksonville Perl Monger's Group listserv. I assumed %u was something like "unsigned". It looks to me like a nice string of 16-bit words (though I can't necessarily account for the 00 or 00=a at the end). But given that it's a buffer overflow type of security hole, I'd wager that it's working on the section that affects who has permission to do what to the server. Go find an x86 disassembler and see if the hex works backwards to something intelligible. Not perfect, since you don't know whether the first chunk (9090) is an instruction or data, but it's a start. If you don't get anything on the first pass, try shifting that (and maybe the next word or two) off and run it through again. j Jax.PM Moderator's Note: This message was posted to the Jacksonville Perl Monger's Group listserv. It occurred to me after I sent the message that 16-bit words sound nice, but WinNT and Win2k are supposed to be using 32 bits. Aren't they? So you may need to chop four or five chunks before what's left makes any sense. Either way, there's obviously not enough code there to do anywhere near as much as Code Red does, so it's got to be something that just opens a security hole for a follow-up request to actually start transferring the rest of the executable stuff. j Jax.PM Moderator's Note: This message was posted to the Jacksonville Perl Monger's Group listserv. Optionally, what I was planning but didn't get this far, would be to create a client-side map for each group itself (based upon State, etc), instead of pointing to the North American group as a whole listing... Yes, I know Bath.PM ( see http://bath.pm.org/map/ ) has done this - but that is a little more than what I am looking for at the moment and this project didn't exactly start out as a PM Group listing, it just ended up that way (originally it was part of two classes I teach at FCCJ: CGS2820 - Web Site Design & Development and CGS2555 - Introduction to the Internet. I may end up using some part of it in CGS2827 - HTML Programming or CGS2557 - Internet Programming - who knows...) At any rate, what've done so far is up for grabs. No, I didn't do the maps, I found them laying around the Internet. They 'look' harmless enough... Anyhow, enjoy! At the job I hold now they have the web server running Novell Netware as the OS and Netscape Enterprise server as the webserver. We also have the Novell Perl distribution installed and it seems to be working fine. My problem is that because of the underlying OS, Perl operates a little differently and doesn't support some functions. Couple that with the fact that the majority of free scripts and tutorials on the web for Perl are geared toward a Unix/Linux OS running Apache and you see where things can get troublesome. QUESTION: Is there anyone here that has experience writing/running/porting Perl scripts to a box running Novell Netware and Netscape Enterprise? SPEAKER HIGHLIGHT: Michael Macedonia, PhD, will be offering an overview/infrastructure conference session on P2P and network-centric warfare. Michael is the Chief Scientist and Technical Director for the US Army Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM). Here is what Michael has to say about the P2P movement: "We are fast approaching a world of 200 million supercomputer tied together via broadband networks. By 2005, PCs will have 4 Ghz processors, gigabytes of RAM and terabyte storage while connected via cable or DSL broadband networks. Layered on this will be graphics supercomputers called game consoles tied into the same networks for entertainment-on-demand. The commoditization of high performance computing and emergence of an enormous P2P fabric is reshaping our knowledge culture on a global scale. As the Chief Scientist for the Army's Simulation Training and Instrumentation Command, I see this as a powerful medium for improving the readiness of our forces through collaborative education and simulation-on-demand."
