First of all, I'd like to thank Wade for his interesting presentation on SVG--An eye-opening view on an interesting and surprisingly powerful standard that's been sitting right beneath our noses all this time. Anyhow. I would like to propose a presentation where I demonstrate the use of the Perl runtime as a musical instrument, providing example uses of the MIDI wire protocol for performance control, PCM sample synthesis and additive mixing, and an asynchronous event loop to tie it all together in realtime. If I were to give the presentation an official title, I would like to call it: The Musical Instrument Known as Perl - or - Use of Perl in MIDI Performance Control and Sound Synthesis Thoughts? -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Wade Johnson) Date: Sun, 27 Jun 2010 11:45:01 -0500 Subject: [pm-h] Potential upcoming meetings Message-ID: <20100627114501.66b459a1@sovvan> A few of us were talking about planning out a few months in advance on the meeting schedule and came up with a potential list. Unfortunately, in the prep for YAPC::NA, I missed sending our ideas. So, here they are: July - The Musical Instrument Known as Perl, Erin Schoenhals August - Perl for non-programmers, G. Wade Johnson September - Black Lab, social meeting/hands-on October - Real hands-on workshop, lead by Todd Rinaldo The idea of the "hands-on" workshop is more of a mini-hackathon. People can bring in projects they are working on where they need some help and others can provide input and maybe some coding. This is particularly helpful if you are stuck on a problem, or have a set of code you would like help on testing, or even code that you would like to put on CPAN and are not sure how. The group includes a number of people with a range of experience that you could tap. This is a tentative schedule, so respond to the list if you like the ideas (or hate them) or would like to see something else happen. Remember to speak up, if you have an opinion. This is your group, too, and speaking up is one way to help make sure the meetings interest you. G. Erin will be showing how to make music with Perl and MIDI. As usual, we will meet at 3131 W. Alabama, between 6:30 and 7 in the lobby. From there we'll go to the meeting. Hope to see you there. G.
