Robert Boone will present on the FUSE file system. We will once again be testing the remote meeting idea. If at all possible, please consider joining us remotely for at least part of the meeting to help explore this idea. At present, we are exploring two options for the remote meeting. 1. The approach we used last time: Google Presentation, irc.perl.org/houston.pm for chat, and freeconference.com. 2. Jeff ran across www.dimdim.com and suggested it might be an idea. I'm currently exploring it as an alternative. I'll keep everyone posted on the approach we'll use as the meeting gets closer. Input from other members is appreciated and encouraged. As an aside, a few of us have kept the IRC channel irc.perl.org/houston.pm up and running all month. If you have any interest in contacting other members or want to dash off a quick question, feel free to drop by. G. If you've used our popular programming Cookbooks, you know just how useful they can be in helping you solve all kinds of programming problems. (And if you haven't used our Cookbooks, check them out on our website http://post.oreilly.com/rd/9z1zfjnl2cod2mnkf209fv2aobk9vp3g3s9uej267co. You can download sample recipes by clicking on specific book titles and selecting "Sample Recipes.") We've received many requests for videos that present the Cookbook recipes step-by-step, so we recently created 4 sample clips that are available online. Now we're eager to gather your feedback. All you have to do is watch the sample video and tell us what you think about it. When you complete the survey, we'll automatically enter you into a special drawing.* Three winners will receive the opportunity to select a collection of O'Reilly ebooks valued at up to $200. *The drawing will be held on August 19, 2009. The winners will be notified via email. If we don't hear back from a winner within 14 days, the prize will be awarded to another survey respondent. Winners will have 90 days to make ebook selections. I've run several 2-machine tests and found the following: 1. Whiteboard - simple drawings and text, editable by all 2. Documents - share PPT, PDF, and PPTX (whatever that is). 3. URLs 4. Public and private chat is supported 5. Screen sharing requires a download (does not work on Linux, didn't try on Mac). 6. VoIP support through Dimdim. 7. Webcam support All of this (except the screen sharing) works with only a browser and flash. No extra programs needed. Only the meeting organizer really needs to have a Dimdim account. I'm going to set up our remote meeting next Tuesday through www.dimdim.com. If you have any interest in the remote meeting technology itself, feel free to join the meeting for a while to see how things work. I will attempt to send an invitation to the list this weekend that should allow everyone access. Many thanks go to Jeff Moore, who introduced me to this site. G.
