Of course, the topic is anything directly related to perl. Have a favorite CPAN module? How about a neat hack you found? How about some problem you solved with perl that was neat-o? If you don't know what a lightning talk is, here are some links: http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2004/07/30/lightningtalk.html http://www.justanotherperlhacker.org/lightning/ http://perl.plover.com/lightning-talks.html Please submit your topic and a couple sentences about what you'd cover. You don't even have to provide slides if you don't want/need them. A talk can be anywhere from 1 minute (better be good ;) to 10 minutes. Please specify your intended length. I will hold you to it. I only plan on having 45 minutes of talk though, since we're also doing elections that day. Send submissions to me or the list: tobert at gmail.com grand-rapids-pm-list at pm.org They will be chosen by me and a committee of my choosing ;) All decisions are semi-final. Did I mention elections are this month? I specialize in high availability setups so there are some complexities over normal hosting sales. If anyone is interested and thinks they would be qualified or know somebody who may be, I am all ears. This is a tough area to find people with those skills. Go perl :) David Szostek UV Hosting From tobert at gmail.com Sat Jan 20 19:05:41 2007 From: tobert at gmail.com (Al Tobey) Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2007 22:05:41 -0500 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] January meeting Message-ID: <5ac7acb10701201905na1939f5l3e3fd748d8d69cd4@mail.gmail.com> Hey everybody. I only have a couple confirmed volunteers for lightning talks this Friday. For those of you who gave me light-hearted offers "if nobody else wants to," now's the time to commit. I might ping a couple people outside GR.pm to see if they want to educate us heathens on non-perl stuff. For instance, I could let Hahnfeld talk about how great Python is and invite somebody else to talk about Ruby. Perhaps Sean would like to talk about Smalltalk/Strongtalk? Klein keeps talking about how great Haskel is ... perhaps I could talk about the relative beauty of the Unix shell environment. We also need ideas for February. I would really like to use a different venue for a couple meetings this year, even if we need to rent them. Please send your ideas to the list, or to myself if you're bashful. -Al From tobert at gmail.com Tue Jan 23 14:08:08 2007 From: tobert at gmail.com (Al Tobey) Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2007 17:08:08 -0500 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] Perl Mongers THIS Friday Message-ID: <5ac7acb10701231408y5cd54cbbk89a36e4486caea20@mail.gmail.com> The Grand Rapids Perl Mongers will be meeting this Friday January 26 at 11:30am. The venue is the same as usual, the Priority Health Conference Center @ 3111 Leonard St. NE Grand Rapids, MI. We will be entertained by lightning talks and free pizza. We are also holding elections for all offices and discussing the plans for 2007. Please RSVP if you'd like to have some pizza so I can buy enough. So far, the lightning talks scheduled are: Chuck Dreyer on the Perl Debugger Ed Eddington on an XMLHTTPRequest implementation Al Tobey on handy shell tricks if I don't get more volunteers We still need 2 or 3 more talks. You don't even have to make slides or anything. You don't have to talk about perl either. The only requirement is that you have a topic and email me before Thursday evening so I can do the lineup. http://grand-rapids.pm.org/ http://maps.google.com/maps?q=3111+Leonard+St+NE,+Grand+Rapids,+MI+49525+(Priority%20Health%20Conference%20Center)&spn=0.016144,0.039312&hl=en See you there! -Al Tobey From tobert at gmail.com Thu Jan 25 10:57:20 2007 From: tobert at gmail.com (Al Tobey) Date: Thu, 25 Jan 2007 13:57:20 -0500 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] Fwd: [yapc] YAPC::NA 2007 Call For Participation In-Reply-To: <7f7c2d5e0701250645s4cec7153qab83c252016beb5@mail.gmail.com> References: <7f7c2d5e0701250645s4cec7153qab83c252016beb5@mail.gmail.com> Message-ID: <5ac7acb10701251057w49661d43h3d50324757e8dd6b@mail.gmail.com> ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jeremy Fluhmann Date: Jan 25, 2007 9:45 AM Subject: [yapc] YAPC::NA 2007 Call For Participation To: yapc at pm.org On behalf of The Perl Foundation, Houston.pm is officially announcing the call for participation for Yet Another Perl Conference North America 2007. We didn't. Now that I've done some booking, one of the days I can't get is this month's meeting. There are a few more days that we'll discuss at the meeting. I don't have final confirmation, but the meeting is very likely going to be in Computer Lab 3 of building 1239 on the Priority Health Campus. Go in the front door and tell the receptionist you're there for Perl Mongers. >From the receptionist, go down the stairs or take the elevator down 1 floor. Turn left at the junction and go down until you see Computer Lab 3. Look for signs, because if we change the room again, they'll be the source of truth. 1239 East Beltline NE Grand Rapids MI 49525 http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1239+E+Beltline+NE+49525&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1&iwloc=addr Call me at (616) 291-0806 if you need help finding the building/room or whatever. By the way, I'm only buying 3 large pizzas based on the current RSVP count. -Al From john at oleszkiewicz.net Sun Jan 28 06:50:03 2007 From: john at oleszkiewicz.net (John Oleszkiewicz) Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2007 09:50:03 -0500 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] Last meeting / next meetings Message-ID: <45BCB81B.7000407@oleszkiewicz.net> Hello all, I just wanted to e-mail and say that Chase and I enjoyed the GRPM meeting and we're looking forward to coming back. I think that the lightning talk format was effective. All of the topics were interesting and some topics were immediately useful to us Smiths guys (e.g. the Perl debugger talk). I think the wide range of talks ensured everyone would get something useful out of the meeting. So - I would put in a vote for more lightning talks for future meetings. I'd be particularly interested in talks about members' favorite examples of perl "kung-fu". I write relatively unsophisticated scripts - I sometimes think they look more like lazy C programs than Perl. It would be neat to get an introduction to what people have done in the past to solve a problem in a uniquely Perl way. If anyone is interested, I could give a talk about an offbeat use of Perl. One of my hobbies is genealogy, and the interoperability standard for genealogical databases is (essentially) a flat text file. I use Perl to automate some of the manipulations of my home genealogical database. The talk probably wouldn't be worth more than 10 minutes, since the stuff I'm doing is pretty simple. But I figured this would be an unusual topic and worth bringing up. -John From andy at petdance.com Sun Jan 28 08:04:48 2007 From: andy at petdance.com (Andy Lester) Date: Sun, 28 Jan 2007 10:04:48 -0600 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] Last meeting / next meetings In-Reply-To: <45BCB81B.7000407@oleszkiewicz.net> References: <45BCB81B.7000407@oleszkiewicz.net> Message-ID: <0D4B6209-6C49-422A-AC12-1DD4D103E824@petdance.com> > If anyone is interested, I could give a talk about an offbeat > use of > Perl.
