I'll be using MySQL 5.x and will cover some of the new things it offers. We will also have Chuck Dreyer of Priority Health give a 5-minute book review on Learning Perl, 4th edition. The meeting is at the usual place, at the usual time. Friday, July 28 2006 at 11:30am at the Priority Health Conference Center. 3111 Leonard St NE Grand Rapids, MI 49525. http://maps.google.com/maps?q=3111+Leonard+St+NE,+Grand+Rapids,+MI+49525+(Priority%20Health%20Conference%20Center)&spn=0.016144,0.039312&hl=en Free lunch is offered for those who RSVP to tobert at gmail.com. -Al Tobey From dan at envoisolutions.com Thu Jul 20 14:21:48 2006 From: dan at envoisolutions.com (Dan Diephouse) Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2006 17:21:48 -0400 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] BarCampGrandRapids Message-ID: <44BFF3EC.70203@envoisolutions.com> Rule #1 of BarCamp: you DO talk about BarCamp. http://barcamp.org/BarCampGrandRapids BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. I've have used Gentoo professionally and leisurely for about two years. About a year ago I started toying with the idea of becoming a programmer, I wrote a lot of simple, liitle time-savers and now I'm ready to take it to another level. I like Perl and I hope to someday become proficient enough to design and develop software with it, though I have a long way to go. If anybody has a favorite book or website please let me know of it. I'm willing to read anything that will assist me in my endeavor to become a better Perl programmer. That's it. I look forward to meeting the group tommorrow. -- Burn's Hog Weighing Method: (1) Get a perfectly symmetrical plank and balance it across a sawhorse. (2) Put the hog on one end of the plank. (3) Pile rocks on the other end until the plank is again perfectly balanced. (4) Carefully guess the weight of the rocks. -- Robert Burns -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... There's actually a software estimation method called COCOMO that is very similar. Basically, it says that the effort of developing the software is predictable based on the number of lines of code. Take the # of lines of code, plug in a formula, and out pops your person-months. This was a cutting-edge estimation technique in the 1980's. I've heard of people who have actually claimed to have tried to use it. :-) The only problem is: How do you estimate the number of lines of code? :-) Regards, --heusser From sdpoling at comcast.net Thu Jul 27 06:26:54 2006 From: sdpoling at comcast.net (Steve D Poling) Date: Thu, 27 Jul 2006 09:26:54 -0400 Subject: [grand-rapids-pm-list] New to the group In-Reply-To: <1241648882.1154004001726.JavaMail.root@fepweb11> References: <1241648882.1154004001726.JavaMail.root@fepweb11> Message-ID: <44C8BF1E.2010506@comcast.net> Mr. Burns' idea isn't completely stupid if you're better acquainted with the weight of rocks than that of hogs. Moreover, if you have an unbiased estimator and can add accurately, breaking up one estimation of a big hog into a zillion estimates of individual rocks will result in a closer answer because half your single rock estimates will be too ig and half will be too small and those errors will average out to zero. Voila. (Once you went along with my premise of an "unbiased" estimator, you made this trick mathematically valid.) As for COCOMO and software estimation: I keep a set of multi-sided Dungeons & Dragons dice in my desk... mheusser at charter.net wrote: >> Burn's Hog Weighing Method: >> (1) Get a perfectly symmetrical plank and balance it across a sawhorse. >> (2) Put the hog on one end of the plank. >> (3) Pile rocks on the other end until the plank is again perfectly >> balanced. >> (4) Carefully guess the weight of the rocks. >> -- Robert Burns >> > > haha. > > There's actually a software estimation method called COCOMO that is very similar. > > Basically, it says that the effort of developing the software is predictable based on the number of lines of code.
