As in past years, we're going to be combining our November and December meetings into one holiday meeting extraordinaire! Our very own Al Tobey will be delivering a presentation that's sure to get you in the Christmas spirit. At the very least, you'll walk out of the meeting knowing more about how you can do something like this using some cheap hardware and a Perl interpreter: http://video.google.com/videoplay?q=wizards+of+winter Yes, even you can create a tacky Perl-based light show in your front yard (disclaimer: we're pretty sure that video wasn't done with Perl). We'll meet at Priority Health, 1239 East Beltline NE, at 11:30am on December 16. Newcomers are always welcome, and there is never a fee to attend a Perl Mongers meeting. Please note the change in venue for the meeting -- building 1239 is the main building right in front of you as you drive into the Priority Health campus. It's just north of the corner of East Beltline and Leonard St. next door to the Red Hot Inn. Free pizza will be provided for ALL ATTENDEES WHO RSVP! Please RSVP to matth at everysoft.com if you want to attend and want pizza. We look forward to seeing you! Message-ID: <4kchs4$2pmosl@mxip34a.cluster1.charter.net> Brian D Foy is the editor of the perl review, an O'Reilly Author, serious perl contributor, and one of the key founders of the national user's group we now know as perl mongers. (Oh, he's apparently a coauthor on learning perl 4th edition. Did that ship allready?) Brian is also available to speak at GR.PM in the 2006 season. Here's his web page: http://www252.pair.com/comdog/ He's also, apparently, a humble guy - he wants -us- to tell him what we are interested in him speaking on. A quick check of his stuff sees that he's done quite a bit or work on design patterns in perl, so we could ask him to talk on design patterns, the perl mongers, and what he sees "on the horizon" in the community. Message-ID: <13c4da410512150633o3bf21386u642ea051a6e43e4d@mail.gmail.com> This Friday Grand Rapids Perl Mongers' very own vice president Al Tobey will show you how to hook up high-voltage electrical components to your parallel port with the ultimate goal of creating a tacky Perl-powered mess of Christmas cheer resembling this video: http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=wizards+of+winter Yes, even you can destroy your relationship with your neighbors and burn up your motherboard with hacked together electronics this Christmas! Al will also discuss other inexpensive ways of creating Perl-powered Christmas lights using X10 home automation (sick of crawling under your tree or walking outside to plug in the lights?). And, lastly, we'll have FREE pizza for all attendees who RSVP before the meeting -- so be sure to let us know if you're interested in attending (RSVP to matth at everysoft.com). The meeting will start promptly at 11:30am tomorrow (Friday). We'll be meeting at Priority Health at 1239 East Beltline NE in Grand Rapids near the corner of East Beltline and Leonard St. NOTE THE VENUE CHANGE -- this is *not* the Priority Health conference center. We'll meet in Classroom 1 in Building 1239 (the building right in front of you as you pull into the driveway). Mention Perl Mongers to the receptionist when you arrive. Visitors and new members are always welcome, and there is never a fee to attend a Perl Mongers meeting. We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
