I may be wrong. Is Maypole really easier than Catalyst? I'm not so sure. Install Maypole and run the BeerDB example and it doesn't work without you going through the endless module dependencies and patching them to behave as documented (or close enough to satisfy you). Install Catalyst and the example in Catalyst::Manual::Intro works straight off *without* an intimate knowledge to CDBI being required. Now, I know the examples aren't anything like the same but I can personally invest a lot more faith in documentation when I can assert that it corresponds to the software I'm trying to run. And Maypole has some pure wackiness in it. Class::DBI::Loader::Relationship? Congratulations on making Class::DBI::Loader hairier. Where is the syntax documented? I suspect that the sole reasoning behind that module is to make the demo more impressive - not a great reason to use it. I've previously rambled about my other problems with this on Perlmonks. You see, when it gets to the point that I'm working through someone else's code (much of which is undocumented) to get a fairly straightforward web app working I find myself wondering what value I'm actually getting out of it: suppose a set of ``normal'' CDBI modules incorporating a bit of business logic and a set of nice looking TT templates done by your Dreamweaver monkey - what exactly are you missing that Maypole provides but can't be put together more simply using CGI::App and its associated plugins or, more recently, CGI::Prototype? CRUD methods? I think I've got that covered, to be honest. Bit of a ramble. I'm still making my mind up about all this and have only recently been playing with Catalyst so my opinions will probably change over time. It was really just an experiment during the testing of new ways of running the DCGLUG website. Interest has been stunning - zero! We've had one DCPM meeting that I remember in Exeter, there's no reason not to have another at some time. We can arrange it via the list or the website. The problems with the website are two-fold: a fascination with regular monthly meets and a propensity to send v.frequent emails. I get the feeling it's meant to groups of less busy people concentrated in smaller geographical areas. i.e. it is a USA model. :-( -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.dcglug.org.uk/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/isbnsearch/ http://www.neil.williamsleesmill.me.uk/ http://www.biglumber.com/x/web?qs=0x8801094A28BCB3E3 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Yes, Perl in Devon & Cornwall is a bit of a niche that isn't going to pick up many passing browsers :) > We've had one DCPM meeting that I remember in Exeter, there's no reason not to > have another at some time. Any reason not to use the D & C Perl Mongers page and list? Cross-posting to D&C LUG and announcing on use.perl should get the attention of all but the most hermetic of local perl mongers :) London.pm started with only a handful of people, now its probably one of the most important perl groups worldwide. The perl mongers have an irc server we could set up a channel on, but it would help if we had an infobot to keep the channel open if nobody is logged in. irc.perl.org, I'm often on it (TeeJay). I wanted to see how the meetup system worked, learn what I could that may be applicable to other groups and just see if I could use anything from it on DCLUG. Meetup don't allow a group to be deleted, only amended. If it's a distraction, I'll clarify the meetup test site and point to the real website. BTW. It would be handy to have the main website URL in the list email headers or in the sig added to each message. The List-Id and the rest are there, just not the website. -- Neil Williams ============= http://www.dcglug.org.uk/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://sourceforge.net/projects/isbnsearch/ http://www.neil.williamsleesmill.me.uk/ http://www.biglumber.com/x/web?qs=0x8801094A28BCB3E3 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
