Is this list very active? This is probably the first posting to this list I've seen in 6+ months. There are two related and active groups in the area, the Central Ohio Linux User Group (colug.net) and the OSU OpenSource Club (opensource.cis.ohio-state.edu) which both have regular meetings and fairly active mailing lists. Both of which have many members who use Perl and periodically have perl-related talks. Having been to Scottie McBeans, I don't think its the best place for a meeting unless we want to sit on couches and draw pictures using hand motions. I liked the meeting at March 1st ( they gave us free pizza!!! ). It was half way between campus and downtown. My vote is for room with at least a whiteboard or projector and free parking ( non-students might have a hard time parking at OSU ). Nationwide would be nice. In addition to just meeting, I'd be interested in working on a project that we could give back to the community. I'm good with Perl syntax wise but I haven't had a medium or large sized project to apply it to. One of these days I want to write a photos.yahoo.com replacement without the Yahoo propaganda. My understanding is that we would do a formal meeting with white-board and projector later in January, in a more formal environment. For example, in the pre-meeting we might talk about, do we want to organize a monthly meeting, where can we have it, who can we have as guest speakers etc. The discussion would be mostly about how do we rejuvinate Perl Mongers in Columbus over the next year. This one should be in a casual environment, and you should come if you want to talk about organizing regular meetings. A cofee house would be great place for this. In the later in January meeting, we would have guest speakers, possibly food, white-boards, projectors, perl discussions and other perl related things. This discussion would be mostly about perl, and current perl topics. This one should be in a more formal environment, and you should come if you want to talk about perl. I agree that a coffee shop would be a poor choice for 'working' meetings with lectures and detailed technical discussions. It might be a nice informal way to meet each other, though. I would be more than happy to see things pick up again and certainly have no objections to anyone scheduling meetings or discussing speakers. The group should be run by the members. I do enjoy being the main contact for the group, managing the mailing list and acting as a middle man to receive mail from the outside world now and then. I am flexible and here to learn perl better and meet others who like perl, (and to help foster the interests of the perl community in columbus). I am not as big of a perl nut as I was in 1999, but I know a little perl and hope that I can make myself available. At the moment, if a meeting is set the web pages will be updated to reflect that, as you can see at http://columbus.pm.org/meet.html . The website is rather boring and limited at the moment, but a list member has offered to help me improve the site. Feel free to make suggestions to me or the list. As far as speakers, many will come for free or a small fee, (such as free dinner or beer). MJD, Randal Schwartz, and a couple others have offered in the past but the meetings disappeared. MJD is certainly one of the brightest and entertaining speakers. I think it's awesome that you have made contact with them - if you have trouble reaching anyone, let me know. You can frequently find me on irc.infobot.org on #perl, which I recommend to anyone who reads the FAQ and enjoys talking about perl. Many of the authors and key people in the perl community have been by to chat, believe it or not. My nickname should be easy to guess.
