From jalex+ at osu.edu Wed Mar 1 23:51:26 2000 From: jalex+ at osu.edu (J Alex) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:00:01 2004 Subject: [columbus.pm] Meeting next thursday Message-ID: <38BE015E.4D86D37A@osu.edu> Ah, I am kissing the hopes of a meeting place with a projector and stuff goodbye for now. How about next thursday at a coffee shop. We met at Caribou Cafe in granville the first time last year, I believe. Also, I am seriously considering picking up a motorcycle. Anyone with a bike want to have me tag along and learn from ya? I will probably take the written test on Friday and pick up the bike when my tax return gets here. =) I would love to have someone take over the web page editing also. I guess I was denying how busy I really am. Look at me...it's almost 1am and I work at 8am....pitiful. Anyway, come(or have come) to a couple meetings and express interest in doing the web site and it's yours to play with all you want. And does anyone want a Dual P3/450 scsi box? Here's my failed ebay posting: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=268467431 I would take 1200$ for it...it's like 6 to 7 months old and has some pretty nice hardware. This will make it even easier for me to afford a bike. It's a hardcore box for linux/freebsd. My employer is letting me bring home a pii box, so I don't mind giving up this one. I don't mean to use this list as classifieds, but if you throw it at the end of a valid posting,it shouldn't kill ya. Also, can someone please complain about this group if you are unhappy with it? I mean really, give me some feedback...like "man, are you losers ever going to meet?" or "you need some ... to liven up the place". I know you are all experts in perl, so I won't try to start a discussion about things again...last time I got "read the docs". haha. One of the biggest needs in the perl community, from my point of view, is some good documentation and tutorials. So many of the non-oreilly books are crap, and outside of the awesome perldoc stuff, there isn't a ton of literature. Especially on perl/GTK. Sure, you can program in it reasonably easy, but I haven't met many people who actually understand what the heck is going on when they use it. Maybe we could have a documentation project for some application of perl. We wouldn't need a projector and you could be half-drunk and still do better than "Learn in 21 days" kind of stuff. There is a pretty cool program that I found out about a few months ago called Kgutenbook(and also tkGutenbook. the Kgutenbook is the same thing, but specifically for KDE). Anyone heard of it? It automatically goes and downloads all of the book titles and info from the gutenburg project and displays them in its own window. From there, you can just click a title and it automatically downloads the file and displays it in its own book style format(just 2 pages). The address for the program is http://www.llornkcor.com/software.htm Well now to my point. What are the advantages of using perl/Tk against GTK? Has anyone worked with either long enough to discover any glaring or even nonobvious problems with either? Also, I know that Tk programs will work in windows, but will GTK stuff? If GTK isn't available for windows yet, that could be another reason why to use Tk. I fell in love with LaTeX, and knowing how many people want to learn perl, I thought it would be really cool if we started to work on a book. It would be a big project, but there is no time limit to get it done and we could have several perl whizzes working on it. Put it on a CVS server, let people work on parts of it, make it in LaTeX, book GPL it, and see what happens. We all have a lot of talent in different areas, and we could just attack our own chapters and then peer review each. Just put up some postscript on our webpage and if things went well we could even try to get Cop-Ez or someone to carry out a bit of a production run and try to sell them, and get some money for the club. Well, it's actually pretty simple: Gtk.pm is a extremely thin wrapper over libgtk-1.2.so. It uses DynaLoader.pm, which works OS-specific dlopen() magic. Basically, what happens when you do my $topwindow = new Gtk::Widget("GtkButton", foo, bar); is Gtk.pm translates Gtk::Widget::new("GtkButton") into gtk_widget_new("GtkButton", foo, bar). Then DynaLoader.pm uses dlsym() to extract the function address of gtk_widget_new from libgtk-1.2.so, then it translates the perl strings and whatnot into the equivalent C structures, then it calls gtk_widget_new with the given arguments, and finally it packs the C return value into a perl data structure, and returns it. In summary, programming in Gtk/Perl is _exactly_ like programming in Gtk/C. You just get automatic translation of function arguments in between C and perl data structures. -- Colin Walters http://web.verbum.org/levanti (1024D/C207843A) A580 5AA1 0887 2032 7EFB 19F4 9776 6282 C207 843A ----------------------------------------------------------------------- To send mail to the Columbus.pm list send email to columbus-pm-list@happyfunball.pm.org To unsubscribe send an email to majordomo@hfb.pm.org with unsubscribe columbus-pm-list youremail@yourdomain.com ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From kmonte at mchs.com Thu Mar 2 13:02:01 2000 From: kmonte at mchs.com (Monte, Kenn) Date: Thu Aug 5 00:00:01 2004 Subject: [columbus.pm] Meeting next thursday Message-ID: <5146C7B0D0D8D211923B0008C7453A9F01203A59@mcehex02.mchs.com> A team/task oriented approach is probably a good idea in keeping the webpage updated & useful. I don't want to point out the obvious, but a good idea for a presentation would be something on the command line parameters for Perl. This could lead into GetOpt. I AM NOT VOLUNTEERING. I know close to nothing about what I just suggested. perldoc perlrun Going over some ( useful ) one-liners would be nice too: perl -wlpe '}$_=$.;{' file # Count the number of lines in a file It would be nice to see some sort of 'I have read perldoc and I still don't understand how this function works' section. For example, explaining map() or grep() to people who don't use them. Explaining the differences between || and 'and'. ( Or in my case ) explaining how to use pack() and unpack() ( I have no clue! ). Meeting another Perl hacker in person is a perfect opportunity to get away from the sometimes nasty atmosphere of c.l.p.m and certain mailing lists ( http://www.xray.mpe.mpg.de/mailing-lists/perl5-porters/2000-03/msg00375.html ). Oh, and someone should really ask Ilya Zakharevich to maybe give a talk or attend a meeting. He is a math professor at OSU and has been doing Perl for a long time ( 5+ years ). He's an active Perl-5-Porter and has done a lot with the OS/2 port of Perl as well as general Perl patches ( he's credited with quite a few RE patches in 5.6 ). I've asked Perl questions during his office hours :) and he really is a nice guy ( strong accent, but very smart! ).
