Hey there!  New to Perl.  It's used a great deal at my work for reporting and text processing so I'm trying to get proficient in it.  Reading "Learning Perl" (the Llama book) and am enjoying it so far (especially all of the comments).  Thought it would be good to join the local PM group in Chicago, but the website seems to be out of date.  The mailing list seems to be working but the website should really be updated because it gives the impression that the group isn't really active anymore.

Is this mailing list for discussions, networking (in the people sense), technical help or all three?  Out of personal interest, one thing I wanted to ask is if anyone has any experience with using Perl and Qt4.  I'm looking to create a GUI application and am wondering if Qt or wxWidgets is the way to go with Perl.  I know that there isn't a lot of support for Perl and Qt4 right now, but some are working on it:  http://qt-apps.org/content/show.php/Perl+Qt4?content=69748  I know that wxWidgets works pretty well as a cross platform GUI.  Any advice or resources would hep a great deal.

Outreach and newcomer activities at many organizations simply fall down the
list of priorities -- it may have something to do with human nature. I was
at a conference last week where I was totally confused about what the first
day's schedule was or where the activities were taking place.  After talking
to someone who was familiar I realized that I was suffering from
newbie-itis...those familiar with the program simply 'knew' where everything
was.

Let me be the first (as far as I can tell) to welcome you.  You are correct,
the website is a bit out of date, but as far as mailing lists go this one is
fairly active. If you are stuck on something and need immediate help you
might try perlmonks.org or http://www.irc.perl.org/channels.html, sign in,
and ask away. You would be surprised at how quickly you will get a response,
but don't forget to do a bit of homework before you post (read the pod, try
something out) or else you might get flamed.

I'm certain other members here have good advice as well. Good luck and happy
learning.

Yes, welcome. Sorry if my time-challenged reply sounded brusque and sorry to Anthony if you felt compelled to write a warmer welcome because of me. The fact is, it is a lot of work to maintain good communication and it takes someone with an interest, a drive and time to make it happen. <Time>, I think being the big problem. In a way my email suffered from the same problem you felt the website had - a lack of time/effort (available resources) to communicate to newbies.

Honestly, since you are new and have identified an issue from your fresh newbie perspective, you are in a great position to offer specific suggestions. Maybe you can propose content changes and send to Brian or Josh. How about "we have a friendly and active mailing list and suggest you dive right in" or something similar? It's also a volunteer group, so if you want to meet or doing something new or fix something, you can take a lead to make it happen.

So, welcome. I'm doing a lot with Moose, networking, systems administration, XML, database, reporting, R and am a heavy Eclipse/EPIC/Openmake Mojo user, though vi is close to my heart. Many of the most experienced and active movers and shakers in the Perl world are active on the list and it is a special treat to have access to their experience and knowledge. Involvement with the Chicago Perl community has definitely helped me be more successful!

died when I came back this winter and went to the Members area.

Haha, no - taxes will be sent in before that.  I've got a Dr. appointment
that'll make it tough to get back downtown in any reasonable amount of
time.

But certainly others might want to keep that night free for taxes :)

Welcome,

I'm a relatively quiet observer of this mailing list and can assure you that
this is indeed a great place to have difficult questions answered by some
very prominent and knowledgeable Perl minds available.  I've been working
with Perl for the past 5 years or so and have picked up numerous nuggets of
knowledge from the questions and answers posted by members of this list.

Sorry I'm dodging your question about Qt4, but I have no experience in that
area. I have avoided writing anything with a GUI (in Perl) for as long as
humanly possible.  ;)

For whatever it's worth, if anyone ever does get serious about updating the
website I might be inclined to pitch in a helping hand as well, if that's
desirable in any way (I'm guessing it's a safe assumption that the site is
written in Perl?).

At any rate, welcome aboard!

Thank you everyone for the welcome.  I was not criticizing Chicago PM or the website at all; it was not my intention.  I just mentioned it because I was really looking forward to joining the discussion and see what was going on in the community and, upon seeing the website, I was afraid the group was not active anymore.  Would have been a real shame.  Good to see that the mailing list is alive and well.  I too have some experience with websites, nothing professional but out of my own interest, so I can lend a hand if you need it.  I completely understand that not many people have a lot of free time to devote and are investing more time into other things like their jobs.  I can say that it is true for me. It's also a volunteer group, so if you want to meet or doing something new or fix something, you can take a lead to make it happen.

I find that structuring a problem in order to explain it to others often exposes something I've missed and I end up solving the problem myself. I've started an email probably 4 times in the last month only to resolve the issue before sending it. So, yeah, thanks all ;)

It looks like a lot of unnecessary references are being used there.
Seems to me that you just need

  push @{ $hash{$odate} }, {id => $id, ...

It is hard to know without seeing the rest of the code, though.

I wasn't sure if I should get into this topic.  It seems to be pretty
divisive, judging from the blog noise over the last month, and I don't
like noise.  But I do use both (Cassandra and MySQL/Sybase/PostgreSQL)
for resource monitoring so I can discuss it a little, as far as my
experience with real-world usage.

An in-depth discussion will be 60 minutes or more, however.  Maybe this
time just the short version, centered on the Perl module, and next
meeting I can do a full expos??  If anyone else is interested in doing
the long version or contributing data to it, let me know.

{ \%hash }->{ $key } is equivalent to $hash{ $key }...

so:

    push @{ $hash{$key} }, $value;

will do just what you want.

or, to make it a bit clearer to the idiot that 
follows me (usually me) I usually extract the 
value into a more descriptive variable:

    my $purch   = { whatever info you like };

    my $hist    = $odate2purch{ $odate };

    push @$hist, $purch;

Well, that's the obvious choice, isn't it?

BTW, I still think it is STUPID that Perl hides all the %'s and @'s in
almost every practical use of a hash and array.  I understand why it's
$array[0], but I DON'T like it!  If it's an array, it should use the
array symbol!

I should have said that when I was sitting next to Larry Wall waiting
for a lunch that would never arrive at YAPC 2006, but the linguistic
discussion was more interesting.

Two issues:  We generally use the ->{key} syntax here so that
multi-level arrays and hashes are easier to express.
hash->{dim0}->{dim1}->{dim2}, etc.

And more importantly when I tried that, I used the %, not the $.  Must
have been confused.  All hell broke loose.  Not only did I get errors
for %hash, but my other variables, which were defined immediately above,
were flagged with (undeclared) Global symbols ... errors. I went down a
different path before replacing % with $.

Now that I try Lee's solution.  It compiles without error or warning.

BTW, I guess I'm too honest and too academic.  Now I feel that
embarrassment I was trying to avoid.

This may be a stupid question, but will changes such as this (array
references, etc.) be backwards compatible as well, or is a lot of old code
going to need to be rewritten if it is to be used in Perl 6?

Sounds like your talk could fill the meeting.

But I have to question the wisdom of using a database named after a
woman who foretold the future but was cursed with the fact that noone
would ever believe her.  Does that mean you have to ignore whatever the
Cassandra database tells you?  Or does it just apply to your users?

Other questions include:  
Can you get information from the present or the past out of Cassandra,
or is it only good for the future?  

Does Al Gore use Cassandra?  

Or is it used by those 5 guys paid by BP and Exxon Mobil to say that
Climate Change is no big deal?

You're thoughts must have got through to LW anyway - Perl 6 maintains 
sigils regardless of reference.

It does use the array symbol: [] is the symbol for
accessing an array.

$ is the symbol for retrieving a scalar.
@ is the symbol for retrieving a list.

q.e.d., $array[ $i ] indicates the extraction a
scalar ('$') out of the array ([]).

extraction of a list from the array uses

    @foo[ $begin .. $end ]
    
for the same reason: [] indicates "foo" is an array
"@" indicates a list extracted.

ditto @bar{ qw( bletch blort blam ) } taking
a list from the hash 'bar'.

It's all out in the open.

The difference is that

    $foo{ bar } = bletch 1;
    @foo{ bar } = bletch 1;

Produce a different context for the call to bletch.

Think of it this way:

    Hashes store scalars as values.

    The scalar values are accessed individually
    via "$hash{ $key }". 

    If the scalar value is a reference it can be
    de-referenced at the time of extraction.

You could do:

    my $array_ref   = $hash{ $key };

    push @$array_ref, $value;

but can also do:

    push @{ $hash{ $key } }, $value;

and save an extraneous assignment.

Net result: Don't turn a hash into a hashref to
dereference it locally; use it as a hash and get
the value.

Example: given the logfile from hell you want to
regex all of the initial words and assemble a list
of like-minded messages.

The regex can be whatever you like, for this 
example I'll use the first set of word char's
on the line. Other likely options would be 
splitting it on whitespace or indexng the first
colon for a substr.

    my $regex   = qr/^ (\w+) /x;  

    my %hash    = ();

    while( <$fh> )
    {
        my ( $key ) = /$regex/o;

        push @{ $hash{ $key } }, $_;
    }

    # at this point %hash is keyed by 
    # the first word char's with values
    # of arrayref's containing the ordered
    # messages.

If you wanted to sort the lists for easier
handling you could do something like:

    @$_ = sort @$_ for values %hash;

If you wanted to walk down the "Frobnicate"
messages looking for other information you
could:

    for my $msg ( @{ $hash{ Frobnicate } } )
    {
        # $msg begins with Frobnicate, has
        # whatever else on it you wanted to know.
        # ...
    }

come to the conclusion that hacking up Cmenu.pm is

This is not a big deal, but is confusing me.

According to the docs, both of these should turn off Perl::Critic within 
foo():

1)  sub foo { ## no critic
2)  sub foo {
        ## no critic

But I'm finding that only the former works.  Is there something about 
the #2 form that I'm missing?  (This is with the most recent 
Perl::Critic and perl 5.8.5.)

It depends upon what you mean by "within".

P::C directives come in two flavors: ones that affect everything from that point forward in the document and ones that affect the current statement.  It helps to remember that P::C is based upon PPI, which affects the way it looks at things.  PPI does not parse Perl code, it parses Perl documents and multi-line elements are considered to be located at the line that their first character is on.

The first form of P::C directive is one that is located on a line by itself.  It is then in effect to the end of the document or to the next "## use critic" directive.

     sub foo {
         ...
         for (...) {
             ...
             if (...) {
                 ## no critic (ProhibitMagicNumbers)
                 ...
             }
             ...
         }
         ...
     }

     sub bar {
         ...
         while (...) {
             ...
             ## use critic
             ...
         }
         ...
     }

Assuming that there aren't any other P::C directives, ProhibitMagicNumbers is disabled for all elements with positions between the two directives; that the directives are nested within various levels of and cross between blocks doesn't mean anything.

The second form of P::C directive is one that is on the same line as some other element.   It only affects things one the same line as the directive.

     $x = 1249.34 * 20995.392333e27  ## no critic (ProhibitMagicNumbers)


So, given your original question, let's look at what happens with a policy like Subroutines::RequireFinalReturn.  The following code will result in a violation of this policy:

     sub foo {
         for (1..5) {
             say 'whatever';
         }
     }

But, doing this:

     sub foo {
         ## no critic (RequireFinalReturn)
         for (1..5) {
             say 'whatever';
         }
     }

won't suppress the violation, despite the directive occurring prior to the end of the subroutine.  This is because the element in question is the subroutine itself, which is considered to be located on the line prior to the directive.  Changing this to

     ## no critic (RequireFinalReturn)
     sub foo {
         for (1..5) {
             say 'whatever';
         }
     }

or

     sub foo { ## no critic (RequireFinalReturn)
         for (1..5) {
             say 'whatever';
         }
     }

will work.

When trying to suppress a violation, make sure you're using a P::C verbosity that causes messages to include the line number and pay strict attention to that line number when placing the suppressing directive.

There used to be a fixed price feature on odesk.com where you could post
your requirements and accept proposals to complete the work for a single
price. I don't know how many developers using the system are proficient in
Perl though.

BTW, the entire 'bounty for a good solution' concept is really catching on
-- look at innocentive.com to see how large corporations offer bounties for
solutions to scientific problems.

Doesn't look like you got a lot of response to this one unless it was
offline. My guess is that you could somehow mix in Term::ANSIColor
and/or Term::ANSIColor::Markup with Cmenu and get what you need, but I
haven't looked to closely at it. Have you already went down this
route?

I began to try to do so but I can't figure out where in the pm to do it. So far understanding how the module works is over my head. Also, I'm beginning to think that color -- via ANSI::Color or some other method is already incorporated into Cmenu because certain text in the sample menus have color. It probably just a matter of altering the code in Cmenu.pm so that the text in the choices submitted can be displayed in color, but I have not been able to figure it out. My offer still stands if the price is reasonable I can pay. Also, I might also be able to finagle some Cubs tickets to an upcoming game if someone wants to barter.

How come you guys don't just walk the DOM?  Find the "no critic"
comment, and go backwards from there until you hit something interesting
("sub" in this case, "some random line of code" in other cases).

But anyway, clearly the solution for the current variant is to say:

    #line 42
    sub foo {
    #line 42
        ## no critic
        $your->code('goes here');
    }

Now they are on the same line ;)

Theoretically, you could even say:

   #line 42
   sub foo {
      this "is foo";
   }

   sub something_else {
   #line 42
       ## no critic
   }

and disable criticism for foo instead of something_else.

I guess there should be a perl critic rule to detect people abusing
#line to confuse perl critic.  But wait... :)

which was published in 1990s C++ text books and is enforced by emacs.
Unfortunately that caught on with younger programmers and now you need
the colored-syntax editors just to see at a glance where your stinking
blocks start and end.  I'll refrain from using the word "stupid" again
after last week's rant.  Perhaps that is a plot by emacs to force you to
use something besides vanilla vi.

Thanks very much for that explanation; it really clears up a few 
misunderstandings I had.  I think it's because of the following bit of 
POD, unless I'm still missing something.

    The "## no critic" annotations direct Perl::Critic to ignore the
    remaining lines of code _until the end of the current block_,
    or until a "## use critic" annotation is found (whichever comes first).

C) or you don?t care at all about the fact that a .pm file might be a Moose

Yeah, I'd say that that was misleading; I will fix it for the next release.  But even if it were the case, you couldn't put a "## no critic" inside a sub for which you wanted to disable a policy.

Thinking about it a little more, such subtle considerations go into these
decisions.

Animal::Mammal::Dog::Roles::Pet

and

Animal::Mammal::Cat::Roles::Pet

With 25 or so classes in my Eclipse project, let's say I know I need to edit
the Dog Pet role. I have trouble quickly distinguishing between the two
above in the navigator as they both are named Pet.pm in an open folder named
"Role" at the same level. The unsightly naming convention I have helps the
files stick out so I can quickly distinguish Dog_PetRole.pm from
Cat_PetRole.pm. If I get a lot more roles, maybe I'll end up changing it.

I'm using the <role>->meta->apply() form, which is pretty ugly no matter how
you look at it.

It definitely won't show up in a CPAN module, and thanks for the feedback

Chicago job board, what is the URL to that?  What about just chatting about
jobs - are we allowed to do that here?

 

For example, I just finished a contract at a large, traditional financial
institution, I'll just say the name starts with the letter 'N'.  I noticed
the same project manager is now hiring, looking for Perl and Oracle.  It
occurs to me that some fellow Perl monger might be considering taking that
job, and wishes they could talk to someone about what the experience might
be like.  Of course, I'm available for conversation, just e-mail me before
you take that job at a traditional financial institution starting with the
letter 'N'.  But is there a forum for such communication?

So I would say that before saying anything, make sure you realize that

I think there are several reasons why I wouldn't do something like that:

a) Most places I've worked have a non-disclosure agreement that I signed
that stipulates that I will not discuss specifics of past assignments.
Discussing the company's systems/needs/etc. may violate this.

b) When I'm done with a project I trust that the documentation and hand-off
procedures I've implemented will do their job. I normally only accept
requests from the person who actually took over my position and I try to
restrict conversation to the documentation -- for instance, if I omitted
something I will discuss it. Otherwise, I'm not going to be compensated for
providing free training for subsequent personnel, so why do it?

c)  Your code should be understandable, well documented, and readable. If
all those things are true, I would think a subsequent developer would have
little need to discuss it UNLESS that person is not familiar with the
language or the system I was coding for. In that case the company has
replaced you with someone who does not have equivalent skills. When this has
happened to me in the past I would be flooded with questions on how to do
this and that, mostly things that one could find in a book.  That is why
I've learned to restrict my discussions to things that I accidentally
omitted or anything that was unclear.

Do you also have the ncap]-dev* package on your system somewhere with all
the header files?

* Note, I don't know if that's the proper name of the package.
