[Chicago-talk] scalar manipulation

Forgive me if this something I should know, but can someone tell me the simplest way to remove blank spaces from a scalar?
 
 I need to turn 
 
 $a = "now is a good time for a beer";
  
 to 
 
 "nowisagoodtimeforabeer";
 
 Any help would be greatly appreciated.
