In particular, you may be interested in editing and improving http://perl.net.au/wiki/Canberra_Perl_Mongers . Enjoy! == PerlNet: Australian Perl Portal Opens == 10th January, 2005 (Australia) PerlNet (http://perl.net.au/), the Australian and New Zealand Perl portal, is announcing its doors open to the world. PerlNet is focused on all aspects of Perl in Australia and New Zealand, including user-groups, business, education and development. The content of PerlNet can be freely edited and distributed, and the site uses MediaWiki, the same software that powers Wikipedia. PerlNet's goal is to be a resource for all users of Perl, and to bring the community together to collaborate and share ideas. Businesses that support Perl are encouraged to provide listings. User-groups are encouraged to host their pages and content. Individuals are encouraged to write about their projects and experiences. Stephen Steneker, the leader of Sydney Perl Mongers, has already moved his group's content across to the new site. "PerlNet just makes it much easier for our members to get involved," said Steneker. "It's easy for members to write meeting reports, plan new events, and discuss ideas and projects." While PerlNet is aimed primarily at the Australian and New Zealand communities, it's free for anyone to use and edit. "We've been seeing a wide range of contributors," said Paul Fenwick, the founder of PerlNet and director of Perl Training Australia. "We've had material submitted from editors in Europe, China, Israel, North America, as well as locally." All contributions to PerlNet are made under a creative-commons license, allowing everyone to use, distribute, and make derivative works. Registering as an editor takes only a few seconds, and both a mailing list and IRC channel exist to help further discussions. -- Paul Fenwick | http://perltraining.com.au/ Director of Training | Ph: +61 3 9354 6001 Perl Training Australia | Fax: +61 3 9354 2681 From jarich at perltraining.com.au Tue Jan 17 16:59:46 2006 From: jarich at perltraining.com.au (Jacinta Richardson) Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2006 11:59:46 +1100 Subject: [Canberra-pm] Is Canberra PM missing? Message-ID: <43CD9302.9080908@perltraining.com.au> G'day folk, In the 2005 Perl Monger census, Canberra PM is listed as missing! http://www.pm.org/census/2005/537.html This is because Jeremy Price was not available to respond to Dave Cross' census questions (mailing list subscriptions, posts/week, attendance at meetings etc). Considering that we've had 2 very successful meetings in the last 12 months, I'd hate for Canberra PM to fade out of existence. However if Jeremy is still immersed in real world stuff, and since Andrew Pollock has left the city, you may need *someone else* from Canberra PM to consider taking charge. The PM leader for any PM group is responsible for three things: * moderating the mailing list (i.e. removing spam, and allowing through email sent to the list from wrong addresses) * keeping the website up to date * responding to census requests (being a point of contact for pm.org) By far the hardest of these tasks is the website. If you're not a frequent user of WebDAV it can be even more frustrating, and then you've got to generate the content as well! Fortunately, this is a task we can help you with. Sydney PM has decided to relocate it's pm page ( http://sydney.pm.org/ ) to PerlNet ( http://perl.net.au/wiki/Sydney_Perl_Mongers ). Canberra PM is welcome to do the same, if you want to. A Canberra Perl Mongers page already exists at: http://perl.net.au/wiki/Canberra_Perl_Mongers Please feel free to add any edits you like, we'd love your assistance with this collaboration. You are encouraged to have a look at the Sydney and Melbourne Perl Monger pages for inspiration. If you want Canberra Perl Mongers to keep going, it would be great to hear and/or see your support. Even if that's just a response to this email giving your opinion on what should happen to Canberra PM. All the best, Jacinta -- ("`-''-/").___..--''"`-._ | Jacinta Richardson | `6_ 6 ) `-. And do we have the correct contact details at http://www.pm.org/groups/537.html? If the details are incorrect then can someone please contact me to correct them. No-one from Canberra.pm responded to the 2005 Perl Mongers Census. This means that we are about to declare your group as inactive and remove the web site, mailing list and DNS. But I don't think that you are inactive - there are recent entries in your mailing list archive. Someone from Canberra.pm needs to contact me urgently. Thanks, Dave... I believe that Jeremy is still the nominal leader of the group, but I haven't seen him since the last SAGE-AU conference (September last year), and I know that he didn't make it to the last Canberra.PM get-together (November), and didn't respond to the census. We may have to assume Jeremy is AWOL. Andrew Pollock, who has also been helping with the organisation, has flown overseas to work for a new job. > If the details are incorrect then can someone please contact me to > correct them. I can do the work to find a new leader, and even act as temporary steward if required. Canberra.PM is definitely active, and has fantastic members and meetings, even if the mailing list can be a little subdued. I also know that Canberra is practically overflowing with Perl programmers, even if they're not yet Canberra.PM members. (I was able to use a given selection of languages, and perl was the only scripting language available) I learnt just enough to do the task (textual data conversion), but haven't learnt how to do use libraries or subroutines - just very, very, very basic perl. However, I was very impressed with the language - it seems somehow more tuned for writing scripts than python, and seems more expressive - though I did find it curious that by default it doesn't allow named groups in regexps. I do most of my coding in C and Python. If there's anything else I should be doing right now, let me know and I'll hop to it.
