From G.Fletcher at mailbox.gu.edu.au Thu Oct 14 00:55:24 1999 From: G.Fletcher at mailbox.gu.edu.au (Gordon Fletcher) Date: Wed Aug 4 23:59:06 2004 Subject: [BNE-PM] The suggestion box is open Message-ID: Hi All It seems to have been a while since anything got posted here I thought I throw a couple of things out to the list. First off - The suggestion box is open. Does anyone have any bright ideas about what we could do as a group either online or in person? The more suggestions the merrier. We've had a number of new members since our last meeting so it would be good to get together to marvel at each others smiling faces. I've forwarded a message I just received from the AU distributers of O'Reilly's - I think she wants to be friends - Do you have any suggestion that I could perhaps forawrd on? Last off - I've had a bit of a move in circumstances. I took a Internet Development position with a new startup on the Gold Coast - cashexplorer.com They've got some interesting ideas and it is primarily a role that involves Perl. I'm happy. Message-ID: I'll put my hand up to geekwear as well. I just got a bundle of O'Reilly catalogues mailed to me. I'll post them on individually if anyone wants one desparatelyy (I'll need an address). Alternately a meeting could solve the problem in one swop and save me some postage. I'm probably most available on a Friday afternoon/early evening if that is of any use as a starting point. Maybe a cafe (I'll even make a booking - promise) or some other venue (The city TimeZone? but _surely he jests_?). The woman from Woodslane also emailed back. Our developing interest in Geekwear has been noted... She also indicated a willingness to occasional provide review copies and to offer special deals on the O'Reilly products. Now a question - I have a script which forks out multiple requests via LWP to various search engines. It works at an acceptable pace but the hit on my Linux box is something of a worry (~ 18% CPU and 15% Memory on a 400Mhz 128M Redhat installation) any suggestions how to keep the pace without such a big whack on the server? Multiple processor solutions will be entertained. My boss, David Wood, wrote ``Programming Internet Email'', which some of you might have seen - it does have a section on Perl in it. I might be able to get him to come along for a chat, or something - he's usually pretty busy tho. Any interest? I won't forward them to the whole list but if you are interested I will send them on privately. The Melbourne.pm people are clearlu unhappy campers. Another thought - if we are all 'geekwear' fans perhaps we could come up with a specifically Brisbane.pm effort. I've some contacts for screenprinting/printing and I believe that the *.pm groups have permission to use the Camel (I'll need to check this). We could do this on a cost recovery basis (I can cough up the initial cash for printing etc.) Good publicity for getting new members too... Yet another thought (YAT) - It is probably time that we gathered up some more details about ourselves either for private circulation among the group and/or a more public set of information for the website (when I sort out my passwrd problems!). I was thinking initially something fairly pro forma. It would be particularly useful for knowing who to ask for advice (and who should review what?). Gordon
