Yes, I will.
I haven't finished reading the book yet, so that's in the critical path
at the moment :)
Alternatively, if Steve wants to take the book and review it, I'll post
a second review after his.

People.
Y'know I am supposed to be speaking at our next gathering?
Well, err, um, that date clashes with the Primary School AGM (oh how I
laugh when I remember the mayhem I caused at the last two...) and I
don't want to miss it.
Can we rearrange the date? Or, feel free to have it without me. *sniff*
Not that I care...
Or, someone can have my slideshow, and give the talk for me. In my
style. Yes, a solution. Of course, I would rather attend a rearranged
one, but hey,...ok, I stop now.

Ok, when do you think our next meeting is? The only date you've
mentioned is the 18th. Our meeting will (barring reorganisation) be on
the 11th (i.e. the second Monday). The 18th is the BLUG meeting if
we're having one this month.
I know it's the second monday of the month, because someone[0] has some
other club on the first Monday of the month.
So are you trying to reorganise our meeting to a night that definitely
doesn't suit you because you've got a Primary school AGM to attend? or
what?
Please clarify whether you thought the meeting was on the 18th or
whether you're trying to move it to the 18th.

DTRT - clean your CPAN directory out. From the Perl Review -
http://use.perl.org/~brian_d_foy/journal/8314
The size of CPAN is almost to the point that we will
need three CDs to fit it all - 1.3Gb currently. Randal
Schwartz, however, wrote a script to just mirror
the most recent versions of everything (excluding the
perl distribution itself, about 25Mb gzipped). The
mini-CPAN came out to be 225Mb. brian d foy invented
the "Schwartz Factor", or ratio of the real
ective size, currently hovering
around 0.174. He estimates that with the current
size, if everyone cleaned out old distributions to get
the Schwartz Factor up to 0.4, everything will fit on
a single CD again.

I may have agreed to[0] do a very short intro/overview of the Mail::Box set

did point out that Marc has been using them much longer and is almost
certainly bound to know more about them than me.

Yes!
Someone at the last meeting (Joe?) said they would like a full talk
on Class::DBI - any chance? :)

Probably not at this notice!
I could give a 5 minute overview, and then 5 mins on the new features?

So can we have a quick summary?
Where is this gelatinous tower where the meeting is?
And if it's got more than one plausible location for a meeting, which
one will we be using?
And what's the consensus (if any) on food beforehand?

What's wrong with Ryan's Bar and Grill? It's close to here, and has the

Ryan's Bar and Grill, Lisburn Road. If you know where Jelly is, you go
to the Lisburn Road end of College Gardens, then turn left and it's at
the end of the block there.
Or, if you knew where the 4-in-hand was, go there.
I'll be going there after 5.30. Andrew, Stephen, Steve and Duggie are
meeting me there afaik...

Well, December's is already organised and three people have already

The module in question is Class::DBI, but I get the same for Time::Piece as
well. So I take it that it will be the same for whatever modules I install :(
I never installed 'c' on my laptop on the initial install, has this anything to
do with it? I upgraded to Perl 5.8.0 last night, but the above happened when I was
running Perl 5.6.1 as well.
Please help :)

You seem to be missing large numbers of the standard C header files
necessary for compiling C programs. How you managed to have
/usr/include/pwd.h but not /usr/include/stdio.h is beyond me.
This is very odd.

Yes. You really, really, really, really, really want a C compiler on a Unix
machine. Really really really. Really. C makes Unix go 'round.
Install the gcc C compiler and anything that looks like it might contain
standard C header files. On Debian its the libc6-dev package. I don't know
what it is on other Linux distributions. Hopefully there will be an
"install some stuff so I can compile programs" option to install all the
right packages for you.

Yeah, I must have fscked up the installation some way. If there is a way
to fsck something up SWM will find it :)

I bit the bullet and upgraded to unstable. And everything seems to be working
fine now :)

ullo,
anyone noticed that the belfast.pm website is redirecting to blackstar?
I was over in scotland when the meeting was on but if there is an easy
list of what the new features in Class::DBI are could you possibly
forward it to me.
thanks,

And in answer to my own question another way of doing it was which I discovered about 2 minutes after posting :),
my @sql = (getVendorsSql(), getPricesSql());
Thanks again folks.

Just make sure you've got 'no strict "refs"' somewhere before that if you're
using strict. This is what's called a "symbolic reference" and strict no
likey.
The perlref man page has a section on this.

Have you all gone daft?!
Patrick, don't use symbolic references. They're evil.
Use "real" references:
my @sql = (\&getVendorsSql, \&getPricesSql);
foreach my $sub (@sql) {
my $queryString = $sub->();
print "queryString $queryString\n";
}

Has anyone finished with their review book yet? As I am waiting to write
*another* review of the same book. I think it will be interesting to see
what different people think of the same books.
So where are they then? Who has them? I thought by looking at the
reviews on the site I could tell who has them, but apparently not...

Well I have the Perl Developer's Handbook which I'm slowly getting
through. It's not the best of reads at the moment, and the pile of other
books beside the bed full of much more appealing books. I am getting
through it though, it's just a slog.
As for the list of outstanding books not being on the site, that's on my
list of planned changes, most of which are a few weeks from deployment.

I have the mod_perl Developer's Cookbook. I will read it, I will read
it, I will read it. Being a cookbook, it's rather difficult to read
straight through. If you want to take it from me, you can...

Is there a point to this that I am missing?
Two lines of code, one of those lines using another module?
In fact, you have to type more characters to use this than just to write:
my $hashref = { map %$_, $ref1, $ref2, ... };
cf
use HashRef.pm;
my $hashref = merge_hashref($ref1, $ref2, ...);
Isn't this false laziness?

probably. As opposed to me remembering to do the map bit, with the
braces and all, I erase that from my mind and just remember
merge_hashref.
For the same reason as File::Slurp. Everyone knows how to open a file
and read it in, as it only takes a few lines, but it is so much easier
to do
use File::Slurp;
my $foo = read_file($filename);

Right.
I want a book from someone. So I can shame them and have my review in
first. Even though they have had the book for like, forever.
Who has what again? I don't mind which one I get, I just fancy writing a
review. Practice my reviewing skills. Or, try and get some reviewing
skills.
So, can I get one tomorrow, a little something for the weekend?
Of course, if you (pl) need to keep them over the weekend to put the
finishing touches to your (what must be by now voluminous) review, I can
wait.

You can get it at:
http://nerv.cx/liyang/perl/ForLoop-0.0.0.0.0.0.1.tar.gz
What does it do? One thing and one thing only: it takes a sub ref,
passing it a numeric value successively between two limits you specify.
e.g.:
for_loop(1, 10, sub { print shift(). " of ten!" });
Hopefully, support for iterating over arrays will come in the next
release. Beta-testers are welcome! Please contact me for details!

Repeat after me: map is good. Erasing map from one's mind is baaaad.

Well, you can justify *anything* using existing modules in CPAN...
genocide, probably. I'm getting a distinct feeling somewhat akin to the
freshmeat ``My First Shell Script'' syndrome... asserting copyright and
specifying the license for one line of code is just silly[0].
How about actually merging hashes (dealing with key clashes), like the
module's name suggests it ought to do? Something like:
my $ref = merge_hashref(sub { my ($a, $b) = @_;
return $a > $b ? $a : $b }, $ref1, $ref2, ...);

This is exactly what I've been looking for! It's going to clean up so much
of my code!

Can I beta test your next release which has something like, I dunno, you
take a value, right, let us call it a key, and assign it a value? What
do those new-fangled compsci people call it? Ah, yes, an associative
array.
(Liyang, it also would have been funnier if you actually had of
reinvented the for loop and had a file at the specified url. I was
expecting to download it and it to just be a text file which called me
names. Ah well, you missed that one. Boy, am I ever going to harang you
at the Christmas dinner.)

I wasn't advocating forgetting map. I merely wanted a way to merge
hashrefs into one big one. And the clobbering of key/values was
deliberate.

Err, that bit is a no-brainer. I have skeleton files that create allthe
guff around my modules. What, you don't think I cut n paste (or, God
forbid, type) all that gubbins everytime?

But if you pass it a list of hashrefs, how are you supposed to know
which one clobbers the other? Arbitary numeric inquality type things?
Nope, I left it to the user (namely, me).
As opposed to this being a freshmeat first-script syndrome, I fear this
is more a /. bashing of me.

Finite map. :P~~

I've less free time than you!

Looking forward to it. ^_-

But the essence of all that is simply one line! I mean, it belongs more
in a tips and tricks FAQ thingy than being uploaded to CPAN... They had
problems fitting only the most recent modules on CPAN onto a CD; this
isn't going to help matters...

The sub ref is user-specified. (Clobber by default, say.) This might
express my intentions better:
my $total_count = merge_hashref(sub { my ($a, $b) = @_;
return $a + $b }, $count_a, $count_b, ...);
> Arbitary numeric inquality type things? Nope, I left it to the user

But any other potential user () has no choice but to clobber the
things...

Nah, you're just being paranoid... isn't he, lads?
