From shevek at anarres.org Mon Jan 6 17:19:20 2003 From: shevek at anarres.org (Shevek) Date: Wed Aug 4 23:57:55 2004 Subject: Install fest and swap shop 2 Message-ID: I think, from the preliminary level of interest, that there will be a second (more organised) hardware swap shop, combined with a Linux install-fest, bugfix-fest, "how do I do this"-fest, etc, etc. This has something to do with the sheer number of people who will be here anyway to pick up hardware, and someone (who was it?) saying on IRC the other day "Why haven't we had an install fest yet?" The following information will be available at http://www.anarres.org/fest.html Will someone please proof this page as I will be publicising it beyond this list. Anyone who has a list of stuff for sale/swap, let me know and I will link to it from there. Updates will be posted to the page rather than the list. === You should be here if: You are new to Linux and want to get it installed and set up "just how you like it". You can't get some application to do what you want. You just want to see who we all are and laugh at us. You want to teach. Date: Saturday 11th January 2003 Time: 12:00 onwards. Location: 6 Park View Lower Bristol Road Bath BA2 3EJ It's a little alleyway to the left of the sex shop on the lower bristol road. If you need help, call me on 07884 184148. Swap shop rule: You can bring anything you like but if you don't sell it or give it away, you have to take it home again. Networking: I have 60 (enough) switched network ports. We will be running wireless as well but if anyone brings a base station, it could be good. IP address allocation for the LAN is done manually (i.e. ask me for one when you get here). Bring a UTP cable. Linux: Bring recent ISOs or CDs if you have them. I don't keep copies of up-to-date distributions. Computers: If you need your desktop fixed or want to install a desktop, bring it. Laptops are of course welcome/expected/etc. We have power and monitors so please do not bring CRTs due to space limitations. If anyone has a spare KVM (with cables), it could be useful. Food: Bring food. This is a vegetarian house so please bring vegetarian food only. Pizzas will probably be ordered at least once. Coffee will be served. I can't promise to rustle up spares because all mine are for sale and someone might buy them! I really, really am cleaning house. My name is Gavin or greadey if you prefer. I have been using Perl for about three years now and I use it mainly for chopping large amounts of data into more manageable portions and also to format it for presentaion. I spend alot of time trying to convince my work colleagues that they should learn Perl, the only success i have though is with a Delphi addict who is always impressed by how short a really useful Perl program can be. I live on Barry Island, Wales and since you lot are the closest I thought I'd impose myself on you. I run an AMD K6-2 450 MHz PC with 196 Mb RAM. The machine is running Debian Woody, I also have a FreeBSD 4.4 OS as well, but it's broke at the moment. I was lucky enough to install woody on a PC at work, but most of my day to day stuff is accomplished (somewhat slowly) with Windoze NT. I have business dealings in Bath from time to time so I shall try and arrange it so I can meet up with you all at some point in the future. regards, greadey.
