Be there or be un-perled ;-) Leon ----- Forwarded message from Larry Wall ----- Date: Mon, 1 Nov 1999 15:46:45 -0800 (PST) From: Larry Wall To: hv@crypt0.demon.co.uk Cc: Larry Wall , Simon Cozens , perl5-porters@perl.org Subject: Re: grep/map in void context hv@crypt0.demon.co.uk writes: : Isn't the point that (void)'grep EXPR, LIST' is now better written as : 'EXPR for LIST'? Or am I misunderstanding your point here? It really doesn't bother me if people want to use grep or map in a void context. It didn't bother me before there was a for modifier, and now that there is one, it still doesn't bother me. I'm just not very easy to bother. The argument against using an operator for other than its primary purpose strikes me the same as the old argument that you shouldn't have sex for other than procreational purposes. Sometimes side effects are more enjoyable than the originally intended effect. That being said, I'd never grep someone in a void context myself. Job! http://jobs.perl.org Perl Mongers and Career Mosaic have launched the Perl Mongers Career Center at http://jobs.perl.org. You can search for or announce job openings as well as add resumes to the Career Mosaic database. There are thousands of Perl jobs already in the database which can be search in a variety of fashions including distance from a zip code. Coming soon will be features geared towards specific regions that the Perl user groups can use to quickly find stuff near them. -- brian d foy Director of Technology, Smith Renaud, Inc. 875 Avenue of the Americas, 2510, New York, NY 10001 V: (212) 239-8985 ************************************* list services provided by Perl Mongers ----- End forwarded message ----- -- Leon Brocard................................http://bath.pm.org/ leon@netcraft.com........................http://www.astray.com/ ... Message-ID: <19991124171940.A4279@tigger.netcraft.com> (sent to comp.lang.perl.misc) Bath.pm is the Perl Monger group for people in the Bath (Somerset, UK) area. We meet (very informally) at The Hobgoblin in Saint James's Parade, Bath, every Wednesday from 6pm. Come and join us! This is just a little heads-up to attract more people to Bath.pm. As a kind of side note, some of us will be marching off to London this weekend to join Croydon.pm, London.pm, and NY.pm. Greetings to NY.pm-ers and I hope you enjoy your stay in the UK...
