I just got email, shown below. Saved email shows even more alarmist 
email from Meetup in previous years.

Does Meetup collect dues for Austin Perl Mongers? Are dues being used 
for anything?

Howdy Perl Mongers!
Meetup is now charging about $50 per MONTH (and increasing regularly),
as compared to about $60 per YEAR when we first signed up before
Covid.  Yes, the price has literally increased to 10x in just a few
years.
So far I have been personally covering the cost, but now we have more
people joining the Meetup group, some of whom are legitimate Perl
programmers and some who are spammers or fake accounts.
Thus, we will now charge $12 per year in Meetup dues, of which $10.60
goes to the Austin Perl Mongers (after Meetup's cut) to help offset
the rising cost of Meetup itself.
If any Austin Perl Mongers are genuinely interested in our activities
but can not afford to pay the token amount of $1 per month, then
please let me know and we can see about covering the cost for you.

our next in-person meeting is on September 18th:
