My name's Mark Fowler. You might know me as "That guy that used to head up London Perl Mongers" or "The guy that started the Perl Advent Calendar" or "The guy that wrote Test::Builder::Tester". So, I just bought a house in New Lebanon, NY, which google maps assures me is a mere 40min drive away from Albany. Now, I'm pending visa stuff so I won't be moving into the property for a good few months yet, but I thought it might be a good idea to check out my local Perl Mongers group. So, - The mailing list is a little sparse. Do you guys meet up? Are you part of any other groups? (NYC.pm? Boston.pm?) - Anything else in the area a Perl geek should know about? Other local tech groups I might be interested in? - Any advice on what I should be using as a bandwidth provider? I've hooked up Fairpoint giving me 2.5mbps (ish) down, but any idea about about anything more comparable to the double digit bandwidth I'm used to. Boston.pm?) We are pretty much comatose. We've had 1 or 2 meetings in the past 5 years or so, but that's it. I'd be happy to try to get things moving again - and now have contact with RPI's "open source" student group, which might help. > - Anything else in the area a Perl geek should know about? ?Other local tech > groups I might be interested in? I know the local ColdFusion user's group is going strong. > - Any advice on what I should be using as a bandwidth provider? ?I've hooked > up Fairpoint giving me 2.5mbps (ish) down, but any idea about about anything > more comparable to the double digit bandwidth I'm used to. That close to the MA border, I'm not sure; I use Time Warner cable here, and their low-end service is better than that, but still not double digits. > Mark > > > _______________________________________________ > Albany-pm mailing list > Albany-pm at pm.org > http://mail.pm.org/mailman/listinfo/albany-pm -- Will "Coke" Coleda From conor.k.todd at gmail.com Mon Mar 26 10:16:14 2012 From: conor.k.todd at gmail.com (Conor Todd) Date: Mon, 26 Mar 2012 13:16:14 -0400 Subject: [albany-pm] Hello Albany Perl Mongers In-Reply-To: <469B0A80B07F4882A775E77B36AE3310@twoshortplanks.com> References: <469B0A80B07F4882A775E77B36AE3310@twoshortplanks.com> Message-ID: <39BEEF04-A8BB-4E0A-9890-2DECDC6598F5@gmail.com> Hi Mark! I joined this list a couple of months ago, and it's been completely quiet. Which saddens me, given how awesome Perl is. I think a buddy of mine at Google summed it up well when he, having learned that I love Perl, asked, "Isn't Perl what you do to people you don't like?" The language is so easy to write that anyone -- even those without a clue -- can cobble something together in it, meaning that there's a lot of really horrible Perl out there. So, it's sad that Perl gets thrown under the bus simply because many of the WTFs of the early internet used it. Anyway, upstate NY isn't known for it's technological prowess, but you are relatively close to NYC, Boston, and Buffalo, all of which have active PMs. There don't seem to be many people using Perl up here; the closest ones are generally financial firms. As for internet providers, I'm in Albany and I use TimeWarner Cable. Speedtest says I get 20Mb down and 1.5Mb up, but in practice it's 8-10Mb down and 0.8Mb up. I'd go with Verizon's FIOS if it were available here, but it seems to have skipped Albany. But then again, a lot of technology seems to have skipped Albany -- such as networked traffic lights, sidewalks, and bike lanes. - Conor On Mar 25, 2012, at 6:40 PM, Mark fowler wrote: > Hello! > > My name's Mark Fowler.
