It certainly isn't aware of the map wrap-around. Which makes for a fairly comical bot:

A: Food! 2 squares away from me! Apparently it's southward. Off I go!
[Ant moves South]

A: Food! 3 squares away from me! It's southward! I'm so hungry! 
[Ant moves South]

A: Food! 4 squares away from me! Is something funny going on? Must... get.... fooooood.
[Ant moves South]

A: No food in sight. I'll just sit here and twiddle my feelers I guess.
[Ant dies]
