There is no separate indexing file that I have ever found. Each of 
the 161 files has a small field at the beginning that echoes the 
search field of the first record in that file. The search field is 
generated automatically from Author & Title fields on saving a new 
record.  It is that simple - more or less.

I don't think we should move too far out of the ambit of the perl 
subject matter for discussion on this list so will get back to you 
direct with some answers later if the od thingy suggested by Tielman 
is not suggestive of where the problem may lie.

My perl scripts are small, one screen with comments which I now find 
with -p -i switches can be substantially reduced in size as I can 
jettison all the file creation/saving/renaming baggage. Probably 
Jeffrey Friedl would cast them all as simple one-liners!

The Clue files of which there are 161 are typically < 30k each.
