Keith, you have to message the list admin address, not the list discussion 
address, to unsubscribe, or use the web interface.

Per the header in every list message:

   List-Unsubscribe: <http://mail.pm.org/mailman/options/yapc>,
     <mailto:yapc-request at pm.org?subject=unsubscribe>

Sending that to the discussion list just spams everyone else, who can't do 
anything about it.
