[yapc] A word of caution

Hi all,
I am not from Chicago, so I can't say with any
certainty, but I've traveled to Chicago a few times.
I've never had any problems when traveling by L or by
cab. I could rent a car, but I found having a car
while in Chicago is really inconvenient.
My experience with big cities in the United States is
that some times concerns over safty are over-stated,
although again since I'm not from Chicago, I don't
want to contradict any locals. I guess be safe,
listen to your gut, use common sense.
I've found specifically when it comes to warnings
regarding safty that these tend to be a bit
over-stated -- there is sort of a "oneupsmanship"
amongst American urbanites when it comes to statements
regarding the hazardousness of their own cities.
Has any one else experienced this?
