We have two speakers lined up: * Martyn Smith - NodeJS and WebSockets * Sam Vilain - The Joy of MooseX:: Usual time and place: 6:00pm Tuesday 8 June 2010 Level 3, Catalyst House 150 Willis Street Wellington http://wellington.pm.org/ Please start thinking about what you could talk about at the July meeting (or what subject you'd like to hear a talk on). My name is Uriel Lizama, I'm a Perl developer for several years now, and I'm from Mexico. So, what am I doing in the Wellington list? Well, taking aside the fact that I'm almost on the other side of the world, the reason I'm peaking over here is that I'm a fan of New Zealand, I don't actually know it yet, but it's the one place I want to get to know. This has been going on for years, and finally this year I'm gonna be able to make my little adventure, I'm planning in going down there for some three months with my family and live the whole New Zealand experience. So I want to jump start the process and get to know some fellow Perl mongers from NZ. Please send me some shouts, I would really like to know tips and facts that can be useful for my little adventure, and if possible get invited to one of your meetings ;) Cheers from Mexico, and excited to hear from you :D -- Uriel Lizama From grant at mclean.net.nz Sat Jun 5 17:57:14 2010 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Sun, 06 Jun 2010 12:57:14 +1200 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Introducing myself In-Reply-To: <4C09911C.9080301@baboonsoftware.com> References: <4C09911C.9080301@baboonsoftware.com> Message-ID: <1275785834.4196.8.camel@localhost> Hi Uriel On Fri, 2010-06-04 at 18:49 -0500, Uriel Lizama wrote: > Hello, > > I would like to introduce myself to the group. Well I'm sure we can round up a posse for drinks/food when you're in town. Keep us posted of your plans. We had a visit last year from a German Perl Monger - Marcus Holland-Moritz from Stuttgart. During his journey around New Zealand he took thousands of photos and wrote about his adventures. The result was this fabulous book, which you might find useful when you're planning your journey: http://zrox.org/nzbook/ > Please send me some shouts, I would really like to know tips and facts > that can be useful for my little adventure, and if possible get invited > to one of your meetings ;) Our meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, but we can always change things around for a distinguished guest :-) Cheers Grant From uriel at baboonsoftware.com Mon Jun 7 07:54:32 2010 From: uriel at baboonsoftware.com (Uriel Lizama) Date: Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:54:32 -0500 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Introducing myself In-Reply-To: <1275785834.4196.8.camel@localhost> References: <4C09911C.9080301@baboonsoftware.com> <1275785834.4196.8.camel@localhost> Message-ID: <4C0D0828.4050502@baboonsoftware.com> Hi Grant, On 6/5/2010 7:57 PM, Grant McLean wrote: > Well I'm sure we can round up a posse for drinks/food when you're in > town. Is fair to say that if CPAN didn't existed then Perl wouldn't be what it is today. For the current project I'm working on, I'm using CGI::Application, but I needed some special features on it, and I implemented them in a module and just made that module public: http://search.cpan.org/perldoc?CGI::Application::Muto So there it is, my first contribution for CPAN. Comments, suggestions, critiques on it are more than welcome. Thanks to both Martyn and Sam for interesting talks. I'll definitely be looking into WebSockets soon and Sam's talk was a timely reminder that the Moose community are putting out a lot of great stuff that I'm really not taking advantage of. The next meeting will be on July 13th. Lars has volunteered to tell us about Koha and Dan is going to tell us about his exciting new ETL system (I may be paraphrasing there). Another point worth noting is that in July, the Python user group meeting falls in the week *before* Perl Mongers so if, like me, you have trouble getting two 'late passes' in one week then this is a rare opportunity to see what the Python folk are up to. I was going to offer to talk about userv: http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~ian/userv/ I suspect it would be fairly short, so I might just prepare some slides anyway and then I can give it if there's time or someone else can't make it, or else do it in the future at some point. > Another point worth noting is that in July, the Python user group > meeting falls in the week *before* Perl Mongers so if, like me, you have > trouble getting two 'late passes' in one week then this is a rare > opportunity to see what the Python folk are up to. Sanity has prevailed, and Python UG meetings are now the *first* Thursday of the month to avoid ever falling in the same week as Perl mongers: http://nzpug.org/MeetingsWellington So it'll mostly be the week before PM now, but July's will now be July 1st.
