February turned out to be a busy month for us with visitors from Australia and Germany. Which means that our regularly scheduled March meeting seems to have come around very quickly. The 10th of March is next Tuesday and that's the night of our annual Lightning Talk meeting. It's a chance for everyone to be involved and "everyone" includes *you*. * Instead of our usual schedule with 1-2 long talks, the March meeting will comprise a dozen or so 5 minute talks * Speakers will need to sign up in advance (just email the talk topic to me) * Don't imagine your talk needs to be about Perl - we're broad minded folk with wide-ranging interests - so just make it interesting * There are more details on the Lightning Talk page on the web site: http://wellington.pm.org/lightning_talks.html The registrations are looking pretty thin right now so please don't leave it to everyone else - we need YOU. So read that web page, choose your topic and sign up (email me) now! The reason for the prohibition on plugging in your lap top is that it's simply not entertaining to watch people debug their video settings in real time for a 5 minute talk. Even if your laptop is the coolest easiest to set up device (isn't everyones?) it may be that we have the world's most uncooperative projector. That's why I made the rules clear at the beginning. Message-ID: <1236718484.6336.23.camel@putnam.wgtn.cat-it.co.nz> Hi Mongers Thank you to all the participants in last night's lightning talk meeting - it was fun. The slides are up on the web site ... http://wellington.pm.org/archive/ So now we're back into the normal routine. I'm looking for 2-3 speakers for the next meeting. If you have a project you want to show off, a cool module you've been working with recently, a rant about something that's been annoying you etc, email me to book a slot. Alternatively if there's a subject you want to know about then pipe up here on the list and we'll see if we can organise someone to talk about it. Target talk length should be in the 20-30min range but if you just want a 5 minute slot then that's fine too. (I'm guessing Martyn will be looking for a slot to do the lightning talk he was scheduled to do last night). The scheduled date for the next meeting is April 14th which turns out to be immediately after Easter. I'm unsure whether this is a good or a bad thing. We could move it a week either way depending on feedback and availability of speakers. Finally, we bid farewell to Srdjan who will be leaving us shortly to relocate to Brisbane for a couple of years. If you were moved by Srdjans' sermon last night and want to join his campaign then I've attached a poster. Cheers Grant -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... This is a drop-in replacement: { my $date_bad = ($next_meeting eq '2009-04-14'); $not_here += $date_bad; $attending += !$date_bad; } As for dates, 21st would mean I'd be more likely to attend - I have another regular engagement on the second Wednesday each month, which about 6/7 of the time is the day after PM but next month starts on a Wednesday, so changing to a week earlier puts them adjacent again. Proposals due: Friday 3rd April 2009! 17th Annual System Administrators' Conference (SAGE-AU 2009) ============================================================ The System Administrators' Guild of Australia Gold Coast, 10-14th August 2009 SAGE-AU was formed to advance the profession of System Administration by raising awareness of the need for System Administrators, and educating System Administrators in technical as well as professional issues. Our yearly conference provides a forum for System Administrators of all platforms and levels of experience to gather together and share their experiences. Further it provides an excellent opportunity to meet and network with acknowledged experts in the field. SAGE-AU 2009 will be held in the Gold Coast from the 10th-14th August. The theme this year has changed slightly to be based on the CIA model (Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability) with a particular focus on the effects of internet content filtering. Talks or tutorials covering this or related fields are particularly welcomed. Training Program: 10th - 12th August ------------------------------------ SAGE-AU 2009 will include three days of training sessions of both 3 hours and 6 hours duration. Previous years have included tutorials on topics such as: * Management practices for System Administrators * Disaster recovery and high availability * Computer and network security * High performance * Networking * Cross platform interoperability For more details and to submit your proposal(s), visit our Call for Technical Presentations. http://www.sage-au.org.au//x/cgAG Technical Program: 14th - 15th August ------------------------------------- Due to the huge success of last year's change in format, this year again there will be two parallel streams of talks running. If your job includes looking after systems, networks, or machines for which you are not the sole-user, we'd love to hear you speak! Previous years have included talks on topics such as: * Selling yourself/your team * Successful negotiation * Disasters recovered * Security issues * Tools, tricks and tips * Standards For more details and to submit your proposal(s), visit our Call for Technical Presentations. http://www.sage-au.org.au//x/cgAG If you have any questions or require assistance with your submission, please don't hesitate to ask!
