And I can't make it. Does anyone object to having their presentation videotaped? If not, I'll try and get Richard Hector to record them. Details here: http://wellington.pm.org/ Also, from the 'free stuff' department: * We have a number of official Ubuntu 5.10 ('Breezy Badger') CD sets (1 x install CD + 1 x live CD) to give away * Katrina has kindly topped up the supply of conference T-shirts, so there's a good selection for speakers to choose from * The "Learning Perl Objects References & Modules" book is back from loan * We have a copy of Mark-Jason Dominus' "Higher Order Perl" and also a copy of Damian Conway's "Perl Best Practice". Finlay is just putting the finishing touches on his review of both these books, so he's the man to bug if you want to borrow them Regards Grant From grant at mclean.net.nz Mon Nov 14 13:20:34 2005 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Tue, 15 Nov 2005 10:20:34 +1300 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Roundup of Last Night's Meeting Message-ID: <1132003234.21101.30.camel@localhost.localdomain> Hi Mongers A big 'Thank You' to Matt and Andrew, our speakers last night for two informative talks. The slides and links are up in the archive section of the web site: http://wellington.pm.org/archive/index.html The next meeting will be Monday December 12th. Michael has offered to give us a talk on style issues in Perl (if I can hook him up with the relevant resources). That leaves us with one 30 minute slot to fill. Volunteers please. There won't be a meeting in January. I suggest that we aim to hold a lightning talk evening on February 13th. That gives us all about three months to come up with one five minute talk each. Lightning talks are an excellent opportunity for first-time speakers. Yep, that's pretty much exactly how you got yourself into this thing :-) Finlay says you can drop by and pick up the Perl Best Practice book any time you like. The Catalyst framework has been using a similar system - Damian Conway's NEXT - for quite a while; and the differences between NEXT and Class::C3 are subtle, as months of heated debate on perl6-language will attest to. Perl 6 is likely to use C3 by default, with a class trait in the specification to select an alternate dispatch mechanism. DBIx::Class is experimentally using C3, and it is likely that the next major version of Catalyst might, too. Just to pre-empt a possible flamewar, remember that inheritance is not about what objects *are*, it's about what they *do*. This change in perspective takes the steam out of most of the anti-multiple inheritance arguments. Or at least shuts up the person you're talking to for long enough for you to duck away. Sam.
