From sam at vilain.net Thu Aug 4 19:18:07 2005 From: sam at vilain.net (Sam Vilain) Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 14:18:07 +1200 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Social in Lieu of Technical meeting Message-ID: <42F2CC5F.5090402@vilain.net> Hi all, Given no-one's stepped up with a talk this month, the social fallback plan wins by default. There has been a lot going on at OSCON in Canada, and no doubt we can get some flavours of the event together for a brief distraction, hopefully in the form of some videos of the event, or perhaps some summaries of what people were talking about in the Perl|Python|Ruby|etc world. The date is August 8th, at the usual time and place: http://wellington.pm.org/ Come down for a beer|wine|coffee and chat! Sam. From jarich at perltraining.com.au Thu Aug 4 20:40:49 2005 From: jarich at perltraining.com.au (Jacinta Richardson) Date: Fri, 05 Aug 2005 13:40:49 +1000 Subject: [Wellington-pm] OSDC 2005 Call for papers Message-ID: <42F2DFC1.1020202@perltraining.com.au> Sending this on, on behalf of the OSDC 2005 committee. ------------------- OSDC (Open Source Developers' Conference) is a grass-roots/low cost conference in the style of a YAPC or PyCon. It's organised for developers, by developers, and we're looking for papers on open source languages, technologies and tools. The conference will be held in Melbourne (Monash University's Caulfield Campus) from the 5th til the 7th of December, 2005. Last years conference had about 160 people and around 60 papers on a range of topics - see http://www.osdc.com.au/papers/2004.html for a list. This list might also be useful if you're looking for ideas on what sort of thing would be appropriate. To submit a proposal, get yourself to the www.osdc.com.au website, and hit the 'Call for papers' link, or go directly to the paper submission website at http://osdc2005.cgpublisher.com/cfp.html Key Dates: Proposals deadline 19th August 2005 Proposal acceptance 12th September 2005 Submission deadline 28th October 2005 Final version for proceedings 15th November 2005 Conference 5th - 7th December 2005 Please feel free to pass this on to any other people or groups you think might be interested in submitting a paper! thanks Hope to see you there! That would leave 30-40 minutes for another speaker. From looking back at the list archives, we had volunteers to speak on the following topics: * debugging strategies * using the Perl debugger and other debug modules * unit testing legacy code and refactoring * source code control with DARCs * source code control with subversion and svk I'm now in a position to resort to bribery - having brought a quantity of swag back from the conference. So anyone who delivers a 30 min talk will qualify for a tee shirt - while stocks last. I'd recommend getting in early if you want your choice of colour. Form an orderly queue :-) Cheers Grant From grant at mclean.net.nz Wed Aug 17 02:53:13 2005 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2005 21:53:13 +1200 Subject: [Wellington-pm] Any astronomers out there? But I'm thinking about >going. There's no real paradox. Several people from New Zealand have gone to the last several Linux.conf.au conferences (myself to the last two). At the one last year (2004) Mike Beattie offered to run the next one (2006) in Dunedin (where he lives). Since (a) the location has always been decided by competing offers to organise it, and (b) it'd been to most major Australian cities and (c) the only other semi-serious offer that I was aware of was for somewhere fairly obscure in Australia, and (d) Dunedin was relatively easy to get to from most parts of Australia (no worse than many Australian cities; easier than Perth from the East), Linux Australia agreed to let him run it in New Zealand. You're welcome to argue the name is wrong, or refuse to attend because "the Australian's are taking over" or whatever. But it's historically been a very good conference, and got a lot of interesting overseas visitors, so I think that'd be short sighted. You're also welcome to claim that New Zealand should organise it's own conferences, but remember that Uniforum used to exist to do pretty much exactly that, and gradually faded away through lack of enthusiasm. (NZNOG took over some of the role for the networking area -- and has had several very good conferences -- but without the same breadth of coverage that Uniforum originally had). For what it's worth, this is indeed a common perception among Australians. New Zealand is our pseudo-extra state, and I suspect you might find (although perhaps its just an urban legend) that the Australian constitution still allows for New Zealand to officially become our 7th state. http://www.treatyofwaitangi.govt.nz/timeline/nz1900.php We don't need visas to visit NZ and you don't need visas to visit us. If you relocate to here then you're automatically granted rights to utilise our Medicare system just as we are if we relocate to there. I believe unemployment benefits swap over as well. Almost all of NZ is cheaper to get to, than Perth, from Melbourne or Sydney and more convenient as well. The biggest advantage in it being two separate countries (in my opinion) is that there's somewhere manageable for us to consider going when John Howard opens his mouth. NZ seems to have a better political climate than Australia. On the other hand, many Australians exhibit a sort of sibling rivalry with New Zealand; in so far as it matters less what other countries might beat us in sport than possibly losing either to a team New Zealand beat recently or to New Zealand's team itself. Doing business in New Zealand (on a contractual basis) is almost the equivalent of doing so in Australia. All it requires is remembering not to charge the NZ company the Australian GST and to fill in an extra couple of boxes on the company tax return. One interesting difference between the two countries is the treatment of the GST. In Australia you can reclaim any GST that you've paid in the last short period (can't remember the length, a week or two) on your way out of the country. In New Zealand, they laugh at you if you ask whether it's possible. Oh, and your $1 and $2 coins are the right way around which is confusing. Though there does exist the "Sibling rivalry" mentioned by Jacinta. An we do give them a good drumming from time to time in the rugby. lol :p . Though I think the closeness in which we work together is important for both countries an just changing the name of the conf would be a entirely useless waste of time wich I wouldn't agree with either. Here it is in reverse: The October meeting will be a version control extravaganza with a number of different speakers talking about Subversion, SVK, Darcs and hopefully Arch. One common theme of these talks will be highlighting ways in which these tools are better than CVS, so .... The September meeting will feature a talk by Peter Kelly introducing CVS. If you're not yet using a version control system (and this is at least as important for sysadmins as it is for programmers) then you'll want to come along and find out how CVS can improve your life. Then after a bit of practise you can come back in October to find out about options to make it even better. And here's the plan again in chronological order: September 12th: * Peter Kelly - An Introduction to CVS * Grant McLean - What I did on my Holidays (OSCON 2005) October 10th: * Grant McLean - Subversion * Sam Vilain - SVK (and maybe hint of SVL) * Geoff Cant - Darcs * TBA - Arch See you there Grant On Tue, 2005-08-23 at 20:09 +1200, Grant McLean wrote: > Hmm, there seems to be a distinct lack of enthusiasm for next months > meeting. That would leave 30-40 minutes for another speaker. It looks likely to me that Catalyst will be choosing Git for projects that suit distributed revision control for the future. Now that we have a reliable CVS -> Git conversion it is possible that we may switch entirely to Git. Martin, Penny and Patrick are using Arch extensively at the moment to help them keep their Moodle tree synced up with the CVS version, but Martin is definitely looking to switch that to Git in the fairly short term (if he hasn't already). He's probably the best person at Catalyst to speak on either Arch (tla) or Git. I've tried Subversion, Monotone, Darcs, TLA and a little bit of Git myself.
