Doug Hendricks: I work for Topaz Consulting in Wellington but effectively I work for Telecom NZ International. I'm a DBA and a programmer: I program some backend application stuff and some sysadm stuff. I use Perl, C and Python, roughly in that order. Nearly all of the C work I do is maintenance and porting. Python is my favourite (watch out Perl) but Perl has the most mature interface to Oracle databases, so I'm definitely not phasing it out. Ruby looks very nice but I'm a little worried about how mature its database interfaces are. That's important in the work I do. I'm married with two children. I've lived in Wellington for more than a decade but I'm originally from California. I'm the nominal 'group leader' having inherited list management functions etc from Dave Moskovitz. I've been programming in Perl since the mid 90s and have been fortunate to work in roles where I was paid to do it. I'm currently working at Catalyst IT where that happy trend continues. Some of you may know me through CPAN or Perl Monks . My latest Perl-related foray is the cover story in brian d foy's recently revived Perl Review magazine but you'll need to subscribe to read that :-). A number of people have indicated that they would be keen to attend meetings if we got that going again. Coincidentally, I have been thinking about that recently. Here's what I was thinking ... Catalyst's office is downstairs from Lan Place where the Wellington Linux User Group hold their monthly meetings. WellyLUG meetings start at 7:30pm and are held on the second Monday of each month (so there's one this Monday). I was thinking that we could piggyback off that by slotting a Perl Mongers meeting in from 6:00 in the Catalyst boardroom (I haven't asked yet but I'm sure it would be OK). I haven't managed to get along to a WellyLUG meeting yet because the thought of hanging around in town till 7:30 is not particularly appealing. Of course other people might prefer to attend both meetings but not in one night, so let's have some discussion on the subject. The next question of course is what a Perl Mongers meeting would consist of. I'd like to run a few sessions for Perl beginners to potentially build the base of interested people. There are also a few Perl subjects that I could talk on but we need other people to volunteer to speak too. The idea of 'lightning talks' is also worth exploring. These are a chance for someone to spend about 10 minutes on a subject of interest. An elaborate set of presentation slides is not required and if we can get a few short talks lined up then hopefully there'll be something for everyone. So, to sum up. How about we plan a meeting for Monday the 13th of September. I can commit to having something prepared for Perl beginners. Can anyone else volunteer to speak on anything? Or, can anyone suggest a topic they want to know more about? I've been programming Perl for as long as I can remember, which, dependent on how much I've had to drink, is either about 3 hours or 10 years :-). I work mostly on web applications and have done various other things in my spare time, e.g. http://makeashorterlink.com/ (though that's actually all in PHP). I moved to Wellington from the UK about 8 months ago and have no intention of going back (and they can't make me). I'd be keen to see some kind of meetings happening in Wellington if there are some interested people around to go to them. You might want to look at File::Find. Briefly, it can call a function every time it finds a file in specified directories. E.g., something like: use File::Find; find(\&mychmod,$directory); sub mychmod { ... do some stuff .. ... current file is in $_ ... } Also note something like: It does a chdir as it goes. Current directory and full file pathname are in $File::Find::dir and $File::Find::name From grant at mclean.net.nz Fri Aug 20 03:41:12 2004 From: grant at mclean.net.nz (Grant McLean) Date: Fri Aug 20 03:41:09 2004 Subject: [Wellington-pm] chmod, chown and friends. No the Perl built-in functions don't support recursion. This is definitely a case where the specialised command line tools are a better fit for common tasks. > If not, is there a cool way of simulating the shell command: > > chown -R user:group directory (and similar)? Don't be afraid to do: system("chown -R user:group directory"); For portability reasons, I don't usually recommend using system when Perl built-ins can do the job. But any platform that supports Unix chown semantics probably has a utility called chown in the path. The File::Find module that is included in the core Perl distribution can be used for recursing through directory trees. Unfortunately is has a very poorly designed API, so I tend to avoid it. If I was going to use a module for recursing, I'd tend to use File::Find::Rule from CPAN: use File::Find::Rule; chown($uid, $gid, File::Find::Rule->in($directory)); That should find everything in $directory. You can build more complex searches by chaining the methods together. For example to find all JPEG files > 1MB File::Find::Rule->file() ->name('*.jpg') ->size('>1Mi') ->in($directory); By the way Cliff, your post was held up in the list admin queue because it was sent to the old list address (ie: before we got switched from Majordomo to Mailman). Do note, that this multi-arg version of system treats all arguments literally, so that if you do: my $directory = <>; system("chown", "-R", "user:group", $directory); Then if $directory ends with a newline then it will apply chown to a directory name matching $directory including the newline! The two key themes for the meeting are: * a session on getting started with Perl for newbies * a discussion to plan future meetings (when, where, who ...) I suspect that the wellington-pm list has atrophied a bit so I've also announced the meeting on the Linux user group list (see below) and would appreciate it if you could forward this message to friends or colleagues who you think may be interested The Perl Mongers web site is: http://wellington.pm.org/ Regards Grant -----Forwarded Message----- > From: Grant McLean > To: WellyLUG > Subject: Learn Perl with Wellington Perl Mongers > Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 21:08:33 +1200 > > Hi LUGgers > > The Wellington Perl Mongers group will be meeting in a couple > of weeks.
